WOW! I would keep it like that just to show off.

Last year, we retired a system here at work (gov't) with an original sub-1GB seagate hard drive, that was still working. It was something like 320MB or so. Lovely "little" kit. Quite the chatterbox tho, like a woodpecker on a tin roof.

I do still have it, just not in one piece (regs you know)

In the 2 decades I've used seagate drives for builds for clients/gov't agencies, I can count on one hand the number of dead seagates, and on one finger, the number that died in warranty. The rest were well out of warranty, and in one case, 10 years out of warranty, so I'll let that slide...but only this one time ;)

Like I said, seagate for life.

I'm using this old Tecra 740CDT to run some dos games and whatever Windows 98 games will run.  I was a bit surprised with the core speed reported by CPUZ since the specs list it as a Pentium 60.  I got it from the local police service who was throwing it out a couple years ago.  Needs a new floppy drive and I'm trying to source a cardbus USB card that works but other than that it's running pretty good.  4 GB hard drive, 2 GB compact flash I use for transferring files, 144 MB of memory and, believe it or not, the battery actually still works.  I can get around an hour out of it.

The scary part?  I managed to kludge it online with an ethernet card, lightweight browser and a madcatz wireless access point.

This is my Lenovo X200 Tablet that I picked up recently, it had a Core 2 Duo, 4gb and no hard drive. I just upgraded it today with a motherboard from the X201 tablet that uses the same layout minus a few screws and got it upgraded to an i7 640LM. I also installed an SSD and will being putting it up to 8GB, it has a new battery as well. Since this tablet was designed when Windows Vista was the current OS it is great to see how much better Windows 10 makes this device especially with the stylus. I currently use this for work and I love it!

Note: There are a few different versions of this device, this one comes with the Walcom display that only works with the stylus. The downside is you don't get a glass display but being a Walcom device the accuracy of the pen/stylus is spot on. Other models have a regular touch screen and there is also non-tablet models as well.

That stylus is pressure sensitive as well isn't it? Looks very similar to the one used with my Mum's old HP Touchsmart TM2 which also has a Wacom touchscreen (the i5 450um is a lot slower than the i7+its also a lot thicker so its not as good a laptop/tablet)

Yes it is! If you hold it then it takes it as a right click so real easy to use. This i7 is hot being a first gen, the core 2 duo was a lot cooler. I am running R20 and R15 on it now so ill post those on the cinebench thread hopefully soon.

I've got a low end Toshiba Satellite 1st gen P4 here without a charger but otherwise I think it works. It's this one:

https://support.dynabook.com/support/staticContentDetail?contentId=637924&isFromTOCLink=false

I have literally zero use for it and since I lack a charger I can't check but it 'ran when parked'. What should I do with it besides recycle it? If someone wants it I could ship it but it's a chonky beast and I'd need to pull and destroy the hard drive...and I don't think it fits in any flat rate box.

Anyone have any ideas? It does have an ethernet port so I guess I could load some really low end Linux on it but what would I even be able to do with it?

Thank you for sharing your experience, a trend we've seen is that failure rates continues to decrease as technology evolves and this is most likely what you will find in the future, more drives with less failures rates and increased endurance and density.

A few weeks ago I bough a new laptop for my collection. Why did I buy it? Well it has a desktop Pentium 4 (it's got 3 fans and a big copper cooler for the CPU) and is in almost perfect condition. Well the sreen is bad and it is missing the battery. Installed Windows XP Pro SP3 on it and it can actually run YouTube videos on fullscreen without problems, well at max 480p, but that's good enough for it's age. I tried putting 3GB RAM in it, but as I later found out it supports 2GB RAM Max, so I just swapped the two mismateched 1GB sticks with a matching pair of 1GB DDR2 666MHz Samsung RAM. The laptop still has it's original HDD. It has Harman/Kardon speakers and they sound pretty good for laptop speakers and are also quite loud. Since I've taken the pictures I've installed some games (GTA SA, NFSU2, TestDrive Overdrive) and will probably install some more games. The laptop runs pretty good. Dissasembled it to change the thermal paste, so I took the opportunity to take a few pictures, too. It uses a 135W power brick, but I haven't taken a picture of it, not that interesting as the laptop itsself. I bough this thing for 50 lv. (about $28 US). It's a HP Pavillion ZD8000.

Here you can clearly see the problem of the sreen. Though for some reason it looks perfect on white. Will fix it sometime in the future.

Just curious, do you have pics of the GPU cooler? I love that laptop though!

Also: Does it support Northwood chips? They run cooler for the same frequency.

Thanks. The GPU and chipset are cooled by one of the fans. The fan has a metal casing which is used as a heatsink. Don't have a picture of the fan, but you can see it in this picture.

txCMLF9.jpg

Well acording to the manual (found it in pdf format) it supports one of the following CPUs:

  • Intel Pentium 4 560 (3.6-GHz)
  • Intel Pentium 4 550 (3.4-GHz)
  • Intel Pentium 4 540 (3.2-GHz)
  • Intel Pentium 4 530 (3.0-GHz)
  • Intel Pentium 4 520 (2.8-GHz)

I have no idea if it will support Northwood, there's not much info about this laptop except that manual, at least not confirmed information, just some gueses. It does not even exsist on HP's website for some reason, but thankfully most of the drivers (except the GPU one) were on the HDD when I bought the laptop.

Those are 775 Pentium 4 and Northwood are socket 478, cannot interchange. Possibly early Core2 stuff depending on chipset.

Nope, 915 chipset. Prescott P4 only. See if you can undervolt.

Oh, I didn't know which socket Northwood used. It runs fine and after changing the termal paste it isn't all that loud. I don't think it's possible to undervolt. Also for some reason HWiNFO show only the HDD temp, I haven't tried with a different program since I'm too busy these days and haven't had time to do anything with this laptop.
