Here are all the good/excellent Ultrabooks/regular laptops you can buy in Malaysia.

 

How I rate these laptops:

Build quality first. Battery life second. The rest are display (HD display will be excluded except in low end options), input devices, warranty and portability. QC and reliability are not considered, however business laptops usually have long reliability while cheaper laptops tend to have worse QC.

 

Budget laptops must have at least 'OK' in build quality and battery life. Mid range ones must have at least good build quality or good battery life or both. Premium laptops must have at least excellent build quality or excellent battery life or both.

 

A few things before reading:

1. Only Windows laptops are included here

2. Tablets are with keyboard dock

3. Laptops above RM5000 are not covered. Prices based on Lazada and official online stores (other websites might have cheaper prices). Models that are not included are either mediocre/not worth it or, I missed out them (let me know). Same laptop model with different configs are not covered unless listed

5. There might be misinformation on specs (let me know if there's something wrong)

6. Gaming laptops are not included (check here)

7. Laptops with 4GB RAM and HDD may need RAM and SSD upgrades. Keep the extra cost in mind

8. This list will be updated from time to time. Prices of old laptops will not be updated. Prices will fluctuate.

9. Some business laptops are customizable. There are many configs to choose from.

Clearing things up:

i5 and i7 don't have much performance difference in ULV (15W) CPUs due to TDP and cooling limitations. Also, there are 3 variants of MX150 GPU: 10W, 10+W and 25W. IMO brands only matter when comes to customer support, buy model not brand.

I plan to buy a new laptop for my niece. She is going to medical school this summer. It seems i5 8250u is a recommended choice. However, after reading some reviews. Many laptops do not have enough cooling to handle the CPU in turbo mode. The CPU will quickly throttle down. As a result, it doesn't perform that much better than 7200u in many real applications. So I'm thinking to get one with 7200u. Especially my niece doesn't play game on her laptop, and I doubt her workload really need a 4 cores 8 threads processor.

 

I want to ask your opinion.
