Choosing a Gaming Monitor to Connect to Acer Predator Helios 300 Laptop

Hey  guys,

So I just bought a new gaming laptop. The Acer Predator Helios 300. https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-Helios-GeForce-PH317-51-787B/dp/B073PY18CN

 

When I am using it at home, I want to connect this laptop to a gaming monitor with 144hz, but the problem lies in the fact that there is no display port or dvi output on the laptop. Just one HDMI output.  I've read that newer HDMI's can support up to 120hz. Can anyone confirm this?

 

If so does anyone know of any monitors out there that support HDMI 120hz that would be compatible with my laptop?

Most likely the laptop's HDMI port is going through the iGPU, and it only supports up to HDMI 1.4. Technically that's capable of 120Hz 1080p.

Yeah you're going to have a tough time finding displays that support high refresh rate over HDMI 1.4 though. I've had a few high refresh rate displays and I couldn't get any of them to work over HDMI (at above like 75hz).

The HDMI is actually 2.0 if that makes a difference

^Also on this monitor's amazon question/answer section the manufacturer is saying that 120hz is possible over HDMI, just want a second opinion on that.

is it a big difference between 60hz and 144hz as I have not seen in person difference

I’m running an HP Omen 25” 144hz with my Helios 300 and it works beautifully.it will work with any 144hz monitor as long as the monitor itself has an HDMI 2 port. Just use a 2.0 compliant cable.
