What are people’s uninformed/informed predictions about ampere? Will we likely see a significant increase in folding efficiency (like with Turing), or just an increase in brute power?

Going from Nvidias history I think Ampere will likely be a reworked turing, much like pascal was to Maxwell. So we could see some decent improvement  as we saw with Maxwell to Pascal

I am sensing that Ampere will actually eat Folding@Home for breakfast, 5M+ PPD for one GPU is near.

Well 980ti to 1080ti was 600-750KPPD -> 1M-1.2M PPD.

so 2080ti 2.5M-3+MPPD to a 3080ti at 5M would fall in line with my prediction tbf.

Oh, sorry, I was not really precise, I meant that mid to high range will be around 5M, so something like 3080 would pull that off, while 3080 Ti would destroy everything else, and I am expecting like 7.5M from it. Tho, pricing for those would be insane, I mean, 2080 Ti MSRP of $1200, imagine what would be the MSRP if 3080 Ti would actually pull 7.5M (and I am really confident that it will)

750k->1.2M (~+60%)

1.2M->2.75M(~+125%, tho, it would be even higher if WUs were optimized)

2.75M->7.5M (~+175%, seems unrealistic when you look at pure numbers, but somewhat realistic if you look at % improvements)

I'm not so sure of that myself, 275%(175% inprovement) Is a big ask. Not impossible mind you.

If Ampere brings us an upper-mid range card (~ equivalent of 2070-ish) that pulls ~ 2 mil, then that's where my money will be going. Hopefully something under 200 watts TDP.

Hey guys, I just installed folding @ home. I'm wondering if there is a "basic things to know" I can read about it before running. I currently use my pc (3700x, 2070, 32gb ram) as a plex server and for gaming but from midnight to about 5pm it usually isn't doing anything. I keep it on but how much money if I'm running folding (or whatever the term is) in "light" power mode would it cost more than sitting locked? Does it wear on the cpu or gpu by folding constantly? Sorry, I'm a newb to this.

Welcome @Eragorn

How expensive it is depends on the price of electricity and your settings, overclocking, undervolting and so on, the CPU/GPU will run at full power if you let them. It is more worth it to only run it on your GPU and not CPU, setting the folding power slider in F@H on full and adjusting the power for the GPU in something like MSI Afterburner. I think there are some guides here on the forum but I haven't read any so I don't know which one to recommend.

Using power creates heat, heat shortens the life mostly on capacitors to a degree, if you have a well ventilated chase it's not that big of an issue, also your fans will be running more than usual and age faster, but again it depends on the overall thermal design of your system.

It's less so "heat" and more "change in heat", IE the process of heating up and cooling down over and over again. Heat causes matter to expand, and cooling off causes matter to shrink (makes sense if we paid attention in physics) It's this process that can over time damage your CPU, like cracks in roads caused by ice freezing and melting over and over again.

Now obviously if you're system is constantly running above 95º that's also going to have some degradation (though most modern CPU's TJMax's are pretty high but I think GPU's tend to start throttling in the mid 80's) but if your CPU and GPU sit at 70 basically always, you'll be perfectly fine (Just ask my 970 [retired but still works] and two 1070ti's)

Yes, this is true for everything else except capacitors, to make it clear electrolytic capacitors, they have a liquid, electrolyte, that can and will eventually evaporate. I do some electronics design in school and as a hobby and electrolytic capacitors typically have their lifetime given as something like 3000h in 105°C. This then can lead to less stable voltages and then lover stable clocks.

Change in heat(maybe temperature would be better) is not that big of a problem when folding as the load is more or less constant. But the change is somewhat worse, cracking solder joints and so on, this is what gives memory artifacts and other odd stuff.

Just got my new power supply! :D Although it's humble in comparison to the PPDs some of you get, I'm still quite happy to get back to folding on a proper GPU - at least it can finish a work unit in less than 2 days. xD  this new power supply(VS450) isn't as efficient, though. It consumes ~20W more during both start up, and under full load. I suppose I'll disconnect a fan or two, or maybe set more conservative power limits to get that back..
