hey guys. just joined up and started folding on my newly upgraded Ryzen 3800x/Vega64 rig!!!

I do have a now unused Z87 4770k system with 2x 7970's...I'd have to get another power supply but I'm considering setting that up to fold 24/7 if I can figure out how to optimize it for that (linux install, etc)

It is pretty easy to install and set up linux these days.  There's a thread in this forum section as a step by step as well, but honestly just install via USB key and then install the F@H package and let it rip.  Depending on the linux distro, you may need to install GPU compute drivers.  That's really all you need to get it running.  Then you can play with various fine tuning stuff after that.

I recommend a high efficiency PSU (platinum or titanium) since it's on 24/7. It might not "pay for itself" depending on your power/cost rate, but going from bronze to platinum was notable for me using a Kill-a-watt meter.

From Project ITNOS build log:

To be honest I got this PSU in a few days before the GPU so I made the swap weeks ago. The old PSU with the 970 and 750ti draws about 240w from the wall, where as the 650 drew about 225. Not a huge cost savings considering my power bill is about 10-12c per KwH, but hey! It's something.

The dual 1070ti's run at 280W now, cant tell you how the bronze would do because it doesnt have enough PCI-E connectors.

for those power savings the price of a platinum/titanium rated unit isn't really covered. better off to get something gold rated which will provide most of the benefit at much less cost, as gold rated PSU's are pretty common and inexpensive these days. Just look at the TXm series  - 80+ gold and it's not even fully modular

I would personally recommend that as well. Gold PSUs are golden (bad pun intended). Titanium and Platinum are currently overpriced in my opinion and they have much smaller selection (they are usually all above 800W (while some cannot be found under 1200W)).

Just try to avoid Bronze and Silver (again, my opinion).

Agreed.  My personal favourite is a 650W Gold Corsair semi-modular. Best bang for the buck and you should be able to run 2 GPUs with it. I have 4 or 5 of these running 24x7x365

Me - being the European person that I am - totally though the dot in 2.093 wasn't a decimal point, but rather was a 'higher number' dot (as in the dot in 100.000 as in 100 thousand).

So for a sec. I thought that WU took over 2000 days!

That confused me for a sec.

Well guys, this are moving at a snails pace for me, the house move was meant to be Thursday last week, then Saturday and now it is looking like all systems are green for tomorrow. I just wanna get back folding, is that too much to ask!

Hope you are all doing well and folding away, Spring is slowly approaching us, anyone got any tips for the best ways to keep folding through spring and summer?

so I've been folding a few days now. Ryzen 3800x/Vega64...I also hooked up my old 7970 but the PPD it was getting vs power, I decided to just fold with the V64 for now...

HOWEVER, my GPU % utilization is always stuck at 88-89% what could be causing this? I have the latest AMD GPU drivers installed, all windows updates and latest BIOS.

The interface shows PPD around 895k-905k consistently. I just added the advanced flag thanks to another member's advice, but my last several WU's (11737) were already 0x22/Core22 for whatever reason.

I have already undervolted/OC'd my card well for gaming, and am sitting at about 1660MHz core/1000mem for my folding profile.

edit: the usage seems to jump up a few % if I close chrome and close the radeon window. its fluctuating but jumps from 88-94% now

I think I have asked the same question about a year ago or so. I think the reason behind your "lower" usage is atoms count and difference between WUs.

Look, to simply put it, my older AMD cards (r9 380 and r9 380x) are jumping (like really spiking) between 60% and 95% on some WUs while on others they are pinned to 100% and dip down to 50-60% for split seconds (which is normal as I understand it). However, on my newer NVIDIA cards (2x1080 Ti and 1070) usage is usually sitting at 85%, 90% or 95% on smaller atom count WUs, while they are pinned at 100% (without any dips whatsoever) on bigger atom count WUs. So it should be okay as long as your PPD is in normal range.

just as a thought, disable CPU folding. i know it affects PPD on nvidia cards. it used to be ok on amd cards but i'm not sure with current drivers?

just to eliminate possible problems

I was about to ask this exact question! My setup is 3900x@4,3 all-core (water)+VII+290x

The 290x is unaffected by this issue. I can see a scaling of GPU usage reported in task manager (switch one of the GPU windows to compute to display the "compute usage"). In WattMan (AMD Radeon driver is on latest version!) I can see the clock rate changing linearly to the task manager usage. However my usage in WattMan stays pined at 98%. All of this is true and tested for Core22 on the GPU and latest BIOS (x570), AMD drivers etc...

For all of this consider that temperature is not the issue here (I am on a big water loop)!

So here is what I found: 3900x is a 12c/24t part. Putting folding on "full" does 22t for CPU folding and leaves 2t for the GPUs.

This pins my 3900x at 100% and the VII at 1400MHz (stock is about 1800MHz) reported usage in Taskmgr is about 75%.

Turning the CPU folding threads to 20 still has the 3900x pinned and the VII at the same usage and frequency

From 19-10 cores folding you can see a scaling of the CPU usage going down and the GPU clock going up to about 1700-1750MHz. The usage goes to about 89% in Taskmgr and stays at 98% in the WattMan

Bellow 10 CPU folding threads there is no impact on GPU folding speed.

Oh hell yeah, CPU folding affects both Folding on GPU and mining as well. I learned that hard way.

It hasn't impacted GPU folding on my 4670k@4,4GHz (4c/4t) that I had before I got the 3900x! I did CPU folding on 2 cores/threads and the rest was used by the GPUs. Resulted in pinned CPU but nice clocks, usage and PPD on my VII!

Yes I know CPU folding on half a 4670k doesn't do much. But having my 3900x fold without the GPUs gives 300-350k PPD wich I would like to add to the GPU power I have...

Well, it does impact my gpu folding on 1070 (I have 9400f on that pc) and it brings up temps of gpu for about 2-3 C

so after setting the advanced flag, and closing a bunch of open programs (chrome and radeon itself) that were maybe using hardware acceleration, my %util seems to be jumping around still (I understand that it will), but is more in the mid 90%'s now...here's a SS of after I left my computer with only FAH open alone for a while..it peaked then fluctuates between 1.5-1.7m PPD now on 11738.

I think I still need to dial in some settings in wattman.

On the advice of yaboistar, I'll keep my mem at 1000, I don't think it wants to go much above that anyway.

I'll keep tabs on it over time and report back any new news, but yea chrome for some reason was potentially causing some "interference"
