All energy ultimately ends up as heat so yes, you are saving on the heating bill but Natural Gas is less expensive per BTU than electricity for heating so there are some trade offs.

It would be nice if there was a better way of redistributing the wast heat from Distributed computing through the house better. 2kW of space heating in the basement doesn’t do the rest of the house that much good when it’s 26C in the basement and the first floor thermostat reads 21.5C

Yes I know

i studied this stuff :P

but yeah I am thinking about connecting my water cooling to the heaters via a heat pump, but that’s not really efficient

in theory - if you set a loop up between the floors with two radiator arrays, would you be able to use that to transfer heat in any useful capacity or would the temperature differential between 21 and 26 (we'll take Gorgon's case) just be too low for a meaningful amount of heat to be transferred? i'm thinking the second, but with a large enough radiator array you should be able to transfer some energy at the cost of running a pump, but would it be any more energy efficient than just using one of those ventilation blowers and some air duct to force an exchange of air which will use more energy but will likely complete it faster

In theory yes but that’s WAY WAY WAY WAY to inefficient. The temperature delta is far from enough. Besides that you would have to blow some air through the radiators anyway.

therefore a simple fan will do much better.

And sure 1kW of heat keeps my room at 30C but is nowhere enough to heat he home. Therefore opening my door is measurable but nowhere near doing anything for hearing the house

So, uh, time to turn off the HVAC heat and let the PC's heat the house?

I currently have 15 thread and an RX 480 running one one PC, and 3 threads (i5-7300HQ) and a 1060 6GB Max-Q running on the laptop.

I have a couple of R9 290X space heaters I could pull out if it gets really cold, lol.

Edit: OK I just got an addition 7 threads and an R9 290X running as well...

Our production is still falling off slowly from the Folding Month and I’ve been watching the overtake date slowly move into the new year over the last couple of weeks. With the holiday season we’re likely going to see a further drop as folks are on vacation and want to do some gaming so we’ll have to pick up the pace a bit to get the overtake in this year.

I should have my BOINC Gold Badge by then so I’ll be able to move a couple of GPUs from Einstein@Home to Folding@Home and as Christmas and Boxing Days are weekdays this year I’ll also be able to fold 24x7 through them as the time-of-day usage rates won’t apply.

congrats on becoming LEET

i know for one that i'm not doing quite as much folding anymore but i'm still doing about 2.7mppd on average, but yeah over the christmas period like you said i'll be doing some more gaming so i'll definitely drop off a little bit.

personally i'm only folding on the 2 1070's in my server now. so only 1.2M PPD max.

it's not much, but it's something?

I dialed back to the GTX960 going 24/7 and a 1070 folding at night time.

I may set some days to let the 1080Ti do some crunching.  Overall, I'm trying to still figure out what is making my electric bill be higher than last year around this time of year.  :I

The last time my power bill nearly doubled, my air conditioner died. The time before that, my refrigerator died. Maybe check your appliances? See if they're running all the time and struggling to do so?

The A/C is already off as the temperature has gone down enough for me to not run it (plus, I leave the inside temps at 82F to minimize my electric bill during the Summers).  The owners already had it repair earlier this year as it had a leak from the hurricane damage from previous year.

Not sure about the fridge, but it don't seem to be struggling to maintain.

Even if something  is wrong, I'm at the mercy of the owners of the property to fix said issue.  At this point, I doubt they would as there is still unfixed hurricane damage to the ceiling and backyard.

Clean the coils for the fridge/freezer.  While it can still keep up just fine, it'll run a lot more if they're dirty and be FAR less efficient.  Especially if there's been various damage done around from the hurricane, there may just be a ton of dust that built up on things like that. Also check to see if some dusk/dawn or motion sensing light outside is always on because the sensor is busted.  Those are both pretty common for oddly climbing bills.

I look at figuring a way to move the fridge so I can check on that and probably clean it (it probably not been cleaned in a while).  I don't have any motion sensing lights outside, so no power draw from those unless I turn the outdoor lights on myself.

Buy a Kill-a-Watt if you don’t already have one and plug the Fridge and any other suspect devices into it and let it run for a few days to see the typical load then compare it to the Energy Star guidelines and see if any of your appliances are power hogs. If they are there are likely rebate programs from the State or Feds to help with the replacements which might tempt the landlord into replacing them.

and you then have a killawatt for monitoring your rigs. ?

Though I have my rigs on UPSes and can monitor their consumption from those I still have a killawatt for sanity checks and checking other devices.

when we bought our house 20 years ago it came with an old fridge in the basement that I immediately replaced with an Energy Star rated fridge that uses 1/4 of the power.

Up until I started folding we were in the 10% lowest band for power consumption.

Now I get emails monthly from my power company with tips to reduce my consumption.

yeah me too, even actual mail sometimes with heplfull little diagrams on how much power i'm using compared to the other households in my area.

i donlt have a kill a watt meter but basically the same thing from a different brand. you can even put in your cost per kWh and it'll just show you how much money you're spending without any need to calculate it yourself ?

I got UPS for one of my computers and most of my network gear.  But yeah, I need to later pick up a Kill-a-Watt.

Though, I still doubt the owners would do anything.  Considering I just found out today they are going to up my rent on the renewal (I will be contesting that as the property still has damage that the owners have not resolved), I may see if I can find a different place to rent.

:I  The power company here give some tips, but it just the usually stuff I already know about.  Plus, I don't own the place, so I don't want to waste my own money fixing the place.  I usually try to leave a place I rent in better shape than when I started renting, but with the owners not putting in some effort, I ain't in the mood to do it for this place.

Just got done with my first semester of pharmacy school, made an upgrade from a 1660Ti -> 2070S, and more importantly, found out LTT had a folding team! I've been wanting to get into folding ever since I found out about it in a study break during Finals week and here I am.
