If it's within your home network just use a VNC client/server if you want GUI remote control.

Would that work for when I'm out of town? I travel a lot.

You may have to setup port forwarding, but it can be done.

Why not just use the FAHControl program?  I use that to control a remote machine in my network and it works just like if I was sitting there.

This is for local network control, I have not done anything to allow outside control.

FAHControl is only for FAH, VNC gives you a remote desktop to do anything you need to do via GUI which is handy for Windows since remote CLI stuff isn't as good for Windows as it is for Linux OS's especially if you're using Home versions of Windows.

That makes sense, I thought we were only in the context of folding.  I only use Linux so again, helps the picture come in view.

going to have to halt folding for a couple of days, my 4G wifi puck here has now become unstable to the point it won't stay running for an hour before it locks up, i've gone from having to reset it once per day, to two, to three, yesterday was 7 and i've reset it three times this morning each about 45m-1hr apart so i'm not sticking around for 24 resets a day.

Well you can still fold, there will be some downtime and fewer points but what matters is some work is done :)

Port Forwarding your inside systems at home to the Internet is a bad idea especially in light of some recent issues found in older folding client software.

You'd be better off setting up a home VPN (OpenVPN) on a NAS if you have one or use a service like Go to my PC etc.

Interesting, I run my 3070 and 3950X with 24 threads for Folding and my overall average score is around 3 million.

Remove the CPU slot and overall average is above 3.5 million.

Seems the new 3xxx series cards may like a lot more horsepower from the CPU

I will have to monitor this for a few days/WU's to get a better idea

On 11/25/2020 at 11:20 AM, Gorgon said:

This will depend on the WU. Some of the recent newer WUs require calculations (Double Precision Floating Point? AVX?) that only can be done on the CPU so your GPU will block (sit idle) while the CPU does the necessary work. The more threads you have available (free) the faster these intermediate calculations can be done so the GPU can get back to work.

With my 3900x and 2070 I have found it seems that it is good to fold at around 21/24 threads on the CPU, though I am not as sure about those newer WU's. (This is on Windows 10) At least from what I have seen, I get around 2.1 Mil PPD w/o CPU folding, but around 2.3-2.4 Mil PPD with it. Should I perhaps adjust it to something more like 18 threads in light of those newer WU's that need more CPU?

Just found out that Chrome Remote Desktop is a thing. Now I can manage my machines for free and without knowledge of the techno-wizardry. Just wish it didn't involve selling another portion of my soul to our greedy, sadistic benevolent overlords, but c'est la vie when you're 'poor' and not well-versed in the dark arts.

image.jpeg.aeb276808f7d6dfb3676c9c91d635f74.jpeg

Wish I'd known about it during the Covid-19 event and Folding Month. Would've kept me from going dark a bunch of times, but oh well.

Edit: To keep Google from holding too much of my soul, I switched to a different VNC. Thanks to @Bitterand @LazyDevfor giving me the idea.

I love Chrome Remote Desktop. It's free, is pretty reliable across many different network setups, and works across tons of different platforms, including access from iOS. Plus CRD has some handy features like the ability to transfer files between the client and host pretty easily. I also like to use Parsec, but that can only be hosted on Windows 8.1+, though the client exists for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and Android.

I have set up SSH and Port Forwarding for my stuff when I am outside of my network. That is secure where I won't have to worry about that issue they mentioned right?
I am planning to make a tutorial for the SSH stuff when I get done with setting up everything with the help from a computer engineer on the FAH Discord.

Question to you HFM experts: Can you transfer an entire HFM config and all of its records between computers and/or OS's? If so, how do you do that?

I'm #1600 on the LTT team finally. With the Vega56 off the climb has slowed substantially. I scored the R5 2600 for the stepmother build so when that comes in the 1650 goes into that computer, there may be a slide down in the ranks with just the P106-100 folding. I've been looking off and on for something, there's been a few really cheap P106-90's but they're not very good I hear.

Setting up SSH or a vpn work great for F@H.  I personally run SSH with port forwarding to my local system when I want to check on the control.  Then I never have to open anything else on the remote box, and it acts as if it is local, so the remote system can keep everything completely blocked in the firewall, as well as only the single port forward to ssh.

ssh -p <ssh_port_here> user@remote.server.com -L 36331:localhost:36330

Then just add it locally in the FAHControl program with port 36331 (the default local one is 36330).

If the ssh connection is up, you see and can control it as if it were local in FAHControl.  If the ssh is down, it shows as connection inactive.

That's basically what I am doing, but with the way my stuff is set up I had it going through a 1 core linux droplet for now until I have something else set up, and I am using keys and such. Plus I am using Putty some and doing things so that stuff can be controlled on both my desktop and laptop.

There aren't any cheap 2060's until the 3060 is restocked twice because scalpers and miners. Won't be till a few months I expect.

Also wouldn't a 1660 be the better buy since nothing about RTX helps with folding?

rtx2060 was the best price to performance of turing iirc

Ah I see, it does have more Cuda. That's what I'll shoot for I guess this spring/summer. I decided to leave the folding box up stairs for the winter to add a little warmth to the room and I'll basement it when it's warmer out. Sometime next week I'll muck about getting the 1650 out and the OC back on the P106-100.

2060 (specifically ko if you can manage it) due to more optimal core usage, according to this thread, though that was before the cuda point boost.
