Hi all:

Just noticed this thread and remember doing this some time back. I have a I5 mining board with 10 GTX 1060's I used for the mining of ETH.  Since have halted all coin things as profit gone.

Could bring it back up for the task. Watched Linus build his server and it was a monster. The rack is in the storage bin but can bring  it out again. Just need a bit of help to get it up and going with their software. It is running UBU 18.04 at the moment.

Just be careful pcie risers will probably lower your PPD a lot. You will need multiple motherboards for 10 of those cards to make them optimal.

FAH needs a lot of PCIe bandwidth unlike mining, so it'd probably perform pretty bad on cards connected via PCIe 1x...

Each GPU task needs an accompanying CPU thread that will fully load a core with lots of data transfer between both. That means that for 10 GPUs you'd also need a >10 thread CPU.

The Radeon 5700XT puts out ~1.4 million folding points/day,

Wow that's 40% faster than mine, but mine is a reference model. What clock speeds are you averaging?

I had to undervolt my card to run at reasonable temperatures, otherwise it sounds like a hairdryer. The card can do over 2100mhz on the core and 1774 on the memory, but it's undervolted to 1000mv and sits around 1900mhz for day to day usage. It's also been 6 months since I folded on it, maybe it improved a little since then.

I'm thinking about replacing it with a 2060 ko, or waiting for the 3000 series and replacing my 2080s, which is also really hot.

Heh, sorry bout that

Don't worry about it!

I'm hoping to have the thread up at the end of this week, depending on my work schedule over the weekend! I'm actually excited to possibly be back at work on a more regular schedule.

I've not 100% set on the start date though, I'm going to talk to the guys today at some point and see what they thing is best to balance the time people have to sign up and the start date if that makes sense.

Happy folding,

Spec!

EDIT: to clarify, the event WILL start in October, just exact day of that month is what I am unsure of

Under Ubuntu with PCIe x1 risers you likely won’t see too much of a decrease in points with GTX 1060s. The issue you will likely run into is you’ll need 1 thread per GPU so an i5 will likely limit the number of GPUs you can keep fed.

Id be curious to see how much you can get out of it but the 1060s. if they’re the 6GB models should produce about 450kPPD or about 400 if you set the power to the minimum (60-90W)

FYI to all -- Purchased an MSI 5700XT Gaming X about a month ago. It replaced an EVGA 2070 Black Edition that prematurely died after 10 m0nths use.

The Radeon 5700XT puts out ~1.4 million folding points/day, with a maximum temperature of ~57 degrees C. Recommend!

Meh. I was running 2 5700XTs and they bounced between 900k and 1.4 but averaged out at about 1.1M so ‘bout the same as a 2060. Imho not a good value for folding but that’s likely just down to AMD and their drivers.

Gave em to the kids for their gaming systems where they’ll be able to shine.

I there a chart for estimated PPDs for GPUs and CPUs?

My RTX 2070 Super at this very moment says 2.2M and R5 3600 80k.

edit. Dropped to 2.0M (0x22)

I dropped 1M PPD going from Linux Mint 20 to W10. Sucks to be me. Hovering around 9M PPD atm. I did notice that the PPD fluctuates more on Windows that it does on Linux. However, at least I've now got HDCP thingy, so 4K films is a thing now. OpenGL sucks.

Went with the 5700XT instead of an RTX 2070, because you can achieve similar folding results at around $100 less than nVidia's offering. While I agree AMD's drivers and software need more tweaking than nVidia, I'd rather do that than pay for an overpriced graphics card in the twilight of the 20XX series.

Actually I found the 5700XTs performed about as good as an RTX 2060 so about the same price. Their raw compute performance in Terrra FLOPs suggest they should do better than they do but Folding@Home appears to run better on Nvidias OpenGL implementation than AMDs. It appears to be an issue at the driver level from what I’ve read. I was hoping they’d do better as I’m interested in better PPD/W as it’s the Power Bill in the long term that could see improvements.

I also found running them under Ubuntu to be a pain to be able to tune their power limits, fan control and undervolting.

All of these issues appear to be at a driver level and AMD just doesn’t seem willing or able to fix them. Likely they’re more focused on the gaming performance which makes sense as that is where the majority of their market is and they have more limited resources than their competition.

There is a new CUDA core coming for folding at home that has potential to further widen the gap.

Don't get me wrong. I like AMD products. It’s just easier for me, in my use case, to stick with NVidia for now.
