Anyone got any ideas why my 980 won't fold but my 1080 in the same system is?

Sorry about it being a photo, not on my main system atm.

EDIT: New log shortly, that was a bad photo

Urgh it moved before I took the grab, one sec I'm DDUing the system and trying a reinstall of the drivers.

Finally got the second slot on the second PC up and running, turns out some crud got into the socket, used come Electronic contact cleaner and now she runs well.

For some reason the DDU fixed the issue, never has an AMD GPU in this system though...

I’ve gone to the Dark side and picked up a Ryzen 1200 for $99 Cdn and a open-box GigaByte AX370 Gaming K7 for $122 and 8GB DDR4 for $55 so I’ll be moving cards around in a couple of days and will have one slot open. So I’ll be waiting for 2060s to go on sale over the next few months or perhaps Navi will arrive ...

The first unit it picked up was, naturally a 13816, which are notoriously bad and posted a 611,316PPD on that.

Currently working on a 14176 with an estimate of 757294, 6% in, which I consider more in-line. This is under Linux and I have to still tune the Case Fan Curves as it is starved for air at 63C and it is cooking the GTX above it, which is at 80% fan, to 81C.

The current (410.104) Nvidia drivers don't yet support Fan Control from the command line nor Graphics Clock offsets and the system it is in is hiding in the basement without a monitor installed.

I'll be adjusting the fan curves and seeing how far it will boost over the weekend.

But as per normal for the EVGA Ultra Cards even at stock it is boosting to 1920MHz, so not to shabby, but it is running at about 107W out of it's likely over optimistic 160W power limit.

That's quite an improvement from the 1060. So you think you can push it a bit harder for a tad more ppd?

Depends on the Silicon Lottery as to how far it will overclock. There’s lots of headroom left in the power limit and the EVGA Ultra card’s have beefie coolers on them so it will come down to how much GPU overclock it will take before instability sets in. Of my Turing cards my 1070 will run for weeks with a +150 but my 2060 starts crapping out at +75 so a +60MHz is as far as I push that one (the Turing bins are 15MHz increments as opposed to Pascal’s 13)

But I need to get the Thermals under control in the case first. It’s an old Fractal Define R4 for now with a Noctua 140mm iPPC 3000 PWM in the front bottom and a cool master 140 in the front top for supply and another cool master in the Top rear and a Noctua NF-A14 in the rear for exhaust. I’ll likely pickup another Fractal Define C when they next go on sale and 2 Noctua 140mm iPPC 2000 PWM for supply and 2 120mm iPPC 2000 for exhaust.

One of the things I like about the higher end GigaByte Gaming motherboards is that there’s individual thermal sensors beside the PCIe x16 slots and you can control the case fans with them and with a bit of curve tweaking get a good balance of airflow and noise pushing the cards or running them at reduced power limits during the short A/C season here.

I've gotten Define C mini's for $55 (with the tempered glass option though I doubt in your situation it matters) so definitely look out for sales. Depending on if you care about the noise, Meshify's would go a ways in aiding cooling, but iPPC's are going to be notably louder.

They're currently in the 90's, the regularly go on sales in the 70's (2 year price histories included)

Thanks,

I already have a price alert alert set on PC Partpicker for Canadian Vendors.

I don’t really like the Meshify mostly due to the foam dust filter which is a PITA to clean compared to the screen included with the Define C. Hence the iPPC 2000rpm rather than the Redux 1500s to accommodate the side vents at the front. Worst case you can just pop the front cover off the Define C and run it with just the air filter in front of the fans.

I’d rather have the solid panels with the sound absorption than the Plexi or tempered glass.

Now if they’d only provide a model without a power supply shroud I wouldnt have to drill out 23 rivets.

I love how people talk about mining as if it kills cards, but I'd say folding is harder on the cards than mining and my 980 has been folding since I bought it a few month after release and its still going.

I’d say it depends on the card. Bought one of the first low-end dual fan GigaByte 1060s for eldest kid’s “Gaming” rig when they were first released. After about a year the fans started to rumble when pushed above 63%

This is one of the reasons I started buying exclusively higher end EVGA cards as they have beefier coolers, better fans and have a 3 year warranty that should cover any fan issues that arise in the cards useful lifespan.

As long as you can keep the cards running well under 80C GPU and fans under 75% they should run for years. If they really wanted to increase the MTBF on the fans they’d move from sleeve to Ball Bearings but even at the 2000-3500 rpm most of these run at in the 66-100% range they would be much louder.

and if I do resell them I can honestly say they’ve never been used for mining ?

As for the mining cards the ones I’ve seen in my City the sellers want way too much money for them. Better to just take the money you would have spent on older, less efficient hardware and put it towards a Turing or Navi ...

Thats exactly why I have mostly higher end cards too, My 1080ti being an EVGA hybrid, my 980ti being a beefie Palit jetstream.

My 1080 I got from LTT so is a reference and my 980 got given to me when I upgraded someones PC for them and is a reference

But have to say they may be loud but them reference blower coolers really do last.

And if worst comes to worst I'll just rip of the shroud and zip-tie a couple 92mm high performance fans on the GPUs own heatsink, like I did with my GTX 970 SC from EVGA. Have to be said, those ACX 2.0 coolers were badd.

just add a 120mm AIO cooler ala Gamer Nexus. Steve managed to shoehorn an EVGA one in a GTX 1060 of all things

So you'll have to retire a card or build another rig now?

There is no retirement in my house!

I have an FM2+ Athlon chip and board for the time being, but..

I also have an i3 8100 and an x79 Xeon laying about...

That Xeon has 40 PCIe lanes...

Retiring a card means less PPD, so clearly the only sensible solution is a new rig :D

I'm thinking I could sell the 8100 to fund a x79 unbranded Chinese motherboard... DDR3 ram is cheap as chips(not the silicon type) these days... ?

Holy moly, still that is nice output.

I need to get my hands on an used one or evga b-stock one.  Plan to finally retire the GTX960 FTW and get one of those 1660Tis to drop in the 2nd rig.
