Maybe time to move those over to BOINC projects then?

That what I did back when my Titans where up there in age.  Buggers crunch Einstein@Home WUs like beasts (had it configured to run two WUs per GPU).

yeah i've been looking at BOINC from a distance for a while now, tough i really do want to get 500M F@H points before i start doing anything BOINC related, because i'm scared i might just end up abandoning F@H altogether.

on a somewhat related note, what's kevdog's law of folding?

on a somewhat related note, what's kevdog's law of folding?

It just a made up law that folders came up with over on OCN back during the Chimp Challenge days (when I started into folding - was the last Chimp Challenge to be held among the different tech forums).

An user that went by handle of Kevdog always had the darnest of bad luck during folding events.  Everything be going well, and then bam, one of his parts would go bad.  So, some folders on OCN came up with a folding law and named it after him.  To put into a simple statement: folding setup can be going well for days/months/years but always when you least expect it; a hardware piece will go belly up.

xD In Kevdog's case, he had a fan come off of his GPU during the Chimp Challenge event, and he zip tie a case fan onto the GPU shroud to keep folding in the event.

About the only big F@H event that now occurs that I'm aware of is the Forum Folding War (FFW) on OCN, but it got a bit messed up since the forum moved plateforms causing a good chunk of folks to leave the forum.

BOINC can be fun at times.  I mostly do a lot of crunching for it during the big Pentathlon events that SETI@Germany hosts.  Which reminds me, I need to check when the next one is planned for this year.

Haha. Yeah I'm folding with an HD 7870 that I've had for like 6 years. Usually between that and 2 cores of my 3570k, I can get 90-100K ppd. But these super large WU's are knocking it back to below 80K ppd... ?

I've been meaning to upgrade to maybe a 2060 or 70, but haven't had time for BFV lately (the only game I play), so that upgrade is on hold, and I may just upgrade my whole system..

That's actually pretty good hardware, if a bit dated.  You might look into a used GTX 10 series to hold you over for a year or two.  I don't think I could drop that RTX tax into a system that old.

I haven't, but that's more due to the fact I pause when I'm streaming so it messes with my production. I'm also still a card down unfortunately :(

Apart from some downtime and moving to beta WU's it's been pretty consistent for me as well. Could this finallly be the time where we get a more balanced range of WU's?

Yeah it has served me well, and done a lot of crunching for WCG over the years. The 3570k was a great chip in it's day. The principle problem I have for BFV is that it doesn't run well with less than 6 cores/threads, irrespective of processor output, it just needs more than 4 cores. I have 4 on the 3570k. So I'm keeping my eye out for a used 3770k (hyper-threaded), then I'll assess my GPU options.

But in the meantime.... WU's that take over 24 hrs ?

Boy replacing the failing sleeve-bearing fan in my UPS with a Noctua NF-A8 sure makes the basement quieter!

Have to go buy some new electrolytic capacitors for this 15-year-old beast tomorrow as it's spazzing out occasionally. I've been meaning to do this for a while but it decided to crap-out today 90% of the way through a couple of WUs. It's back up working again on the bench but the rig's plugged into a surge-suppressor for now.

They’re older PowerWare (Eaton) 9120 700va dual-conversion units that work was throwing out and I rescued from the garbage. Unlike the lower end UPSes which are line-interactive these actually take the line power and convert it to DC then invert it back to AC continuously so are better at handling transients.

Just had to put new batteries in them to get them working but one a failing ball bearing fan and had capacitors that had started to get less effective so I replaced the fan with a Noctua and replaced the capacitors with higher voltage specified parts.

These also have Network Management cards which allow me to poll them and read the power draw for the systems and calculate the system efficiency on the fly.

Generally I haven’t been a fan of Apple Products since they went closed source at the introduction of the Lisa. In fact, at that point, I vowed I’d never buy another Apple product again and I kept that vow for almost 30 years.

A large in-store credit resulted in me getting a iPad 3 (the first Retina display) shortly after their release in 2012 for under $100. I got it mainly for viewing photos but soon discovered it was extremely convenient for casual Surfing on the couch.

I’ve tried Android and Windows tablets and I’ve wanted to like them better but they’re just not there yet. So when my iPad 3 started to struggle with multiple tabs it was donated to the  in-laws and replaced with a 6th generation last spring.

So I got over 5 years service from this device and the battery still held a charge just fine and it is still in service in a diminished capacity.

I noticed you got a bump in points and was going to ask if you got another slot going.

I’ve gone to the Dark side and picked up a Ryzen 1200 for $99 Cdn and a open-box GigaByte AX370 Gaming K7 for $122 and 8GB DDR4 for $55 so I’ll be moving cards around in a couple of days and will have one slot open. So I’ll be waiting for 2060s to go on sale over the next few months or perhaps Navi will arrive ...
