azaher1126

Hey guys I was thinking to make a gaming console, runs windows and uses steam interface, I was wondering if there would be a market for it or not.

Steam machines are a totally new, not failed idea.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

yup - that has been tried already and it failed.

selling a "steam console" does not make that much sense when one can just build or buy a SFF PC, slap windows on it and have steam auto start in big picture mode = DIY steam console.

Meant for people who don't know much about pc's and just want console gaming but with a way better experience and more games

people who "just want console gaming" will just buy a console and not care about any other options either way.

They have the software but they made deals with hardware companies too early.

If you want to kick back with an Xbox or steam controller big picture mode rocks! But aside from that It’s difficult to say “yeah just sell some computers and say they’re consoles.”

It was a great attempt but the software exists freely for those that would like to use it. Personally I loved playing Space Marine, Shadow of Mordor, and Rise of the Tomb Raider with my Xbox controller. I’d love to try Metro Redux or Metro Exodus in 4K whilst couch gaming.

Edit:

we can bet on the GPU market crash to get some sick SLI setups when the gpus are no good at hashing, or the Crypto market crashes in like 8 years. I can wait.

Those run steamOS which is linux so it doesn't have most games

The Windows installer is very easy.

Seriously. The market just isn't there. There just isn't enough money to make it viable. Especially not in the current climate of mining affected prices.

Stoodles my man, these things have been tried already. You could just autorun steam big picture on windows sure, but a lot of games will need configuration and will have problems that will need to be solved through actually using the computer side of it. The format failed not because of the library (about 25% of games are on linux for steam) but because it's pricey, and it's no cheaper than just getting a prebuilt. If you'rs gonna game on windows, you're gonna learn how to solve problems. There's no way around it, and it doesn't offer the consumer any value over a pre built pc. Offers less really.
