Car Enthusiast Club [Now Motorcycle friendly!] - First thread to 100k! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

26 minutes ago, Drak3 said:

Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

If your car is DI then a carbon cleaning of the valves would be a good idea. With port injection its not really much of an issue. There are engine cleaning oils you can run in your car for 5 min that clean out sludge buildup and staining on the internals. Works pretty good tbh. Run rite makes a decent engine cleaner. Back in the day they used to put transmission fluid and run it for a little bit before draining and refilling with oil. The 1.8T in the vw and audis had sludge issues regardless of what you do. Im sure theres an exact reason or variables that play a role I just havnt researched them enough yet.

It sludge's up with either however every customer that uses conventional it happens much sooner, also depends on how long they also go in-between oil changes and what kind they use.

Yup, I had one of the only 1.8Ts I'd ever encountered withOUT sludge issues, but I also seafoamed it twice and changed my synthetic oil religiously. Took the VC off at 130k mi and it was clean! It was tuned on the stock turbo too, and I hit that thing HARD haha. Oh also, I let the turbo cool off after running it for a few. Oil can sludge up if left to cook in a turbo after the car is shut off. They even used to sell turbo timers for this.

With my mk6 I just get a carbon cleaning every 50k miles.

I should have done that with my Mk7... carboned it self to death at 75k. Not making that mistake again!

Yeah all Di only engines will build carbon. Thats why Iam glad the mustang has port and direct injection in the 17 and up models. my 15 gt only has port injection. The ecoboost I had was Di only.

One thing I don’t understand is sludge issues....

Sludge is just old oil, right?  how is a buildup possible if the user is changing the oil As they should?  Other cars should be no different.

you could say Old oil is being leftover after every change, but it’s so unlikely that ONLY the old oil isn’t draining each time.

or are we talking about carbon deposits in the intake system here?

Poor crankcase ventilation and heat play a big factor in sludge. Using a treatment to get rid of sludge isn't ever really recommended because it just collects at your oil pickup and starves your engine, and its usually snake oil.

HATE being a danish carlover, since everything is so expensive here, personally just waiting for the CUPRA to be released so i can exchange my Passat for the new Leon Cupra ST wagon 300hp, it will pair nicely with the 2019 GTI polo we have, and the 150hk passat just feels so slow.

Anyone got strong opinions bout swapping a 64 falcon hardtop to a 289 with an early production c4?

I mean, we're doing it anyway, and I'm pretty sure I know what I'm getting in to, but dont know if theres some kinda obscure thing I'm missing.

the falcon has in it right now one of those dumpster 170s and a fordomatic 2 speed, and while it may run pretty damn well, its just far too anemic for highway driving, so sourced a good running 289 from a local restomod shop and we're gonna be dropping it in pretty soon.

302 and ls swaps were definitely considered, but my brother wants it to be period accurate to a couple years at most for the majority of the drivetrain.
