Car Enthusiast Club [Now Motorcycle friendly!] - First thread to 100k! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

Just learned some good advice for anyone who buys new cars.

If you are trading in a vehicle either lie if asked or just hide it until the salesmen works out the numbers. Then when you tell them (just say you changed your mind and want to trade in) they can't just jack up the price of the new  car/lease thus "stealing" your trade in if you told them at the start which is still quite common.

Or just don’t trade your car in, sell it instead.

Harder and inconvenient, yes, but you do get more for it

the more your previous car is worth, the more it’s worth it to sell too

This is a good point, but if you owe on your car selling it private party becomes that much harder, not to mention it seems seller/buyer integrity has declined over the years. Can’t get people to consistently commit to meeting times. Not to mention with this instant gratification world we are living in, nobody wants to have to sit at a credit union or a bank to buy a used car.

These points are in no way the rule, just what I have come to learn to deal with now a days. Selling things 10 years ago was so much easier. Now a days Craigslist is almost a waste of time with flakes, low ballers or liars.

So far I’ve only bought cheap cars from Craigslist lol.... so I wouldn’t know but I see what you mean. Lot of scammers too on craigslist. The honest ppl are there tho... just have to look long enough.

I prefer to buy things that are paid for by the PO and I’m paying them the full amount in cash tho.... it makes it easier. Louisiana also requires a notarized bill of sale which makes it hard but good because someone else looks over everything for you

I just straight up lied to all the dealerships when buying my car last year. I checked prices for my car online, took the average and added 2k euros on top for wiggle room. 1st dealer offered me 8.5k (which wasa fair offer) trade in when buying a new vehicle, I told him that I've got another dealership offering 11k (which wasn't the case) and they were willing to settle for 10k. Same procedure with 3 other dealerships until I found the right car with the right trim level I wanted. They matched my made up offer of 11k right away, no questions asked.

You have a point, but sometimes people cant afford to store a car while its waiting to be sold so trade-in is the only option ... and some cars just outright dont sell for enough to be worth while spending the time to sell it as a whole car ... but then part-outs are a good option ... Cars in parts usually are worth quite a bit more ... but again .. that needs a ton of space and time, so its not worth the effort for most people

in the end just do what fits your situation

I'd say its quite uncommon, and if you do fall for it then its your own fault. You sign multiple times on agreeing for the final price of the vehicle. The asking price is printed on the window. Unless its a popular car the base markup is usually under a thousand dollars. On new cars with a trade in the dealer does not make much money in the sale. They rely on reselling your trade in for their money. Used cars is a different story. Profit margins on used cars is where they make a lot of money.

It depends how much patience you have. I'm trying to sell some miscellaneous items and I'm so tired of the shot in the dark low ball offers. Like, because its assembled and never been used, apparently that means it should be 1/4 the price of retail.

Isn't it different for leases though? They can pretty much charge whatever they want in that case. Lets say you trade in a car for $2k and you use it as a down payment you could still find a place that will say "Oh we will give you 3k for your trade in" but still have the same bill.

to be fair, that is how you score deals with people who get impatient and just want to get rid of whatever they are hanging onto

Yeah my poor 9-3, it was so fun to drive it,  I was going to put a bigger turbo and intercooler on it, i have all the parts, I'll build an solid engine to be able to reach 350 maybe 400 hp one day.

Focus ST Transmission Update:

Arrived to Colorado and was inspected. Got this email last night.

Quote

Hello,

Your unit has been inspected and it was found to be damaged above and beyond what is covered in the build you selected. Here is a list of what is also needed:

1. The 2nd gear engagement teeth are very damaged and recommend replacing.(New only)
2. The 1/2 slider is also damaged and recommend replacing.
3. The 3rd gear engagement teeth are also beginning to chip and mushroom. Up to your discretion to replace or not.
4. The 4th gear engagement teeth are also showing damage but not as bad as the 2nd and 3rd gears. Up to your discretion to replace or not.
5. The 3/4 slider has some rounded engagement teeth on the 3rd gear side and slightly on the 4th side. Up to your discretion to replace or not.

We have steal cage bearings available if you prefer those over the nylon cage bearings. We also have gear polishing and W.P.C treatments available.

I'm in the process of getting photos of the worn gears, but here's a break down of the prices.

Quote

Recommended Parts:
1 2nd Gear - Focus RS / ST 175.00 175.00Total
1 1-2 Hub and Sleeve - Focus ST 160.00 160.00Total
1 3rd Gear - Focus RS 259.00 259.00Total
1 4th Gear - Focus RS 198.00 198.00Total

3 Counter Shaft Bearing - Bottom or Center Diff Bearing - Top - Focus RS 75.00 225.00Total
2 Counter Shaft Bearing - Top - Focus RS 75.00 150.00Total
1 Center Diff Bearing Bottom - Focus RS 75.00 75.00Total

Subtotal (Includes Shipping and 7hrs Labor) $2549.00

I'm looking to only do the 2nd gear and the 1/2 hub sleeve. the rest (unless I tihnk the 3rd gear is pretty bad) are all things I can live without since this isnt a track car.

you should never trade in or put a down payment on a lease. All it does is lower your payment and if you total the car as soon as you drive off the lot, its money you will never see again.

A local PepBoys is 40% off everything not car parts because they're going out of business so I grabbed a $4.50 (normal $8) bottle of Rain-x cause I ran out and I'm going on a trip. I'm going to go back and grab some more stuff I think since it's such a deal.

Also, if you've never heard of it or used it you all need to try out Eagle One Wipe and Shine quick detail spray, check out some reviews from Apex Detail on Youtube. It beats out most other quick detailers, it protects and beads like a spray wax (better than some spray waxes even) but it goes on without streaks and wipes to a nice gloss even in cold weather, I just re-glossed my daily driver after a rinseless wash with Wipe and Shine and at 40F it was still flashing off and easily wiping to a high gloss, the stuff is great!

I was thinking about just getting a new set of headlights instead of doing stuff to freshen up the current ones but lordy my headlights would be expensive.
the normal ones are a lot cheaper but what my car is actually equipped with

but uh I think I'd rather just look at some techniques and seeing what results I can get.
