Car Enthusiast Club [Now Motorcycle friendly!] - First thread to 100k! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

26 minutes ago, Drak3 said:

Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

what do you guys do in this situation? Actually repair it? I'm sure that'd cost a fortune. Customer scraps car?

That's a tricky one to answer some times... There's a few variables to consider.

What car is it, how much is it worth and how much is the repair

How much does the owner love driving/owning that car.

Some times, you enjoy something so much that cost isn't a factor... but if you get no real enjoyment out of the ownership and it's just a tool to do a job... then it simply becomes a question of economics. Is the job going to cost close to the value or more than the value of the car itself.

I've got rid of cars because over the coming 12 months they were going to need expensive repairs... Dual Mass Flywheel & clutch (£800), a repair to a patch of rust on a wheel arch (£300)... on a car that was valued at around £1000-1200.

I picked up a car that was 2yrs newer, better quality build and reliability (I went from a crappy Ford to a reliable Honda) and got £600 for the Ford given it's issues... so the Honda actually only cost me £1050.

2yrs later some useless runt in a stupid POS BMW side swiped me... his car was a right off mine had superficial damage. Replaced a wing, a door and the engine undertray. Insurance gave me £1700 for the car and after excess and buying it back I had £1512. I spent £700 on the car including refurbishing and powder coating 3 of the wheels, full service, all fluids inc gearbox and a new frequency solenoid valve that was failing. I then sold the car 2yrs later for £700.  Total cost of ownership of that car for 4yrs was almost zero as it required almost nothing by way of repairs for it's yearly inspection (drop links and rear callipers which are common).

So I bought a newer one to replace it... Can't beat Jap reliability and quality. In 27yrs of driving and around 20+ cars owned nothing comes close to it... and before some on asks why so many cars if they're so reliable... for 8-9yrs I owned at least 2 or 3 cars and because I ran a car owners club I would often pick up cars that were beyond saving as parts cars for club members. So at least 4-5 of those were bought to break and a few were bought to save and sell on.

Not many Americans buy wagons, crossovers are really popular right now though.
