Car Enthusiast Club [Now Motorcycle friendly!] - First thread to 100k! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

26 minutes ago, Drak3 said:

Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

I get it, but I've seen so many stupid electrical issues with new vehicles. My boss's f150 has been into the dealership like 5 times in the last 2 years (not counting oil changes).

and I should say If I was buying a domestic, a Ford would be it. ;)

To be fair, I'm not saying other manufacturers are immune to these problems, because they absolutely aren't, I'm just saying that I've known a fair number of Kia owners discover that they're cheaper for a reason.

There's a reason I drive 12-19 year old Hondas and Toyotas.

And I've officially decided that my Tundra is my truck for life. body panels can all be replaced, and it'll always be cheaper than a car payment, and EVERY part on this thing is now less than a grand, so why not? at least when a CEL code comes on it only has 1-4 possible items. I read the code, replace some sensor, and I'm on my way.

engine goes, a junkyard one is about $500.

Transmission blows up, 100,000 mile warranty rebuild for 1800, or a junkyard one for 4-500.

I can buy a whole cab section for like $600 too.

I have yet to hear of a new vehicle that doesn't have loads of electrical problems after 100k. My dad's work vehicle is a chevy equinox. it kills the battery if the key is in accessory mode for more than 10 minutes, or if the car doesn't get driven for 3 days. Just one (anecdotal) example, but it illustrates my point.

@Bitter What's roughly the last year that avoids all the multiplex network BS stuff? I'm figuring 2008-2010 or thereabouts, but I don't know for sure.

Equinox is either a shit battery or a parasitic draw, seen a bad BCM do that.

Well shit, had a 2000ish Lexus in the shop with a smoked PCM that had a bunch of Toyota specific data buss on it so nothing is safe, get some pirated OEM software.

lol. good to know. I have an Amazon special Techstream and VCM cable.

Yeah, the equinox has had several batteries, and the dealership keeps saying nothing is wrong. 🙈

Google how to do a parasitic draw test, should settle down to under 0.030 amps after about 10 to 20 minutes.

I have an ebay special VCDS kit that barely works for my dad's car.

It works /enough/. but anything serious you really need the real thing. this one is basically a generic cable with some pirated software :/ (which to be fair thought it was the real thing originally.. it was like $40.. worth the risk)

I told my dad next audi he gets he'll prob have to get the real thing as the pirate version's software is starting to get dated. hopefully shouldn't be a big deal as he'll look at it as "the price of the car".. much better that way. I seriously don't think I would own an Audi or VW without a legit VCDS cable and software. It's so incredibly useful

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Yeah those will get cleaned out soon. Most of that is salt from this year.

Gotta call them back Monday (transmission guys don't work weekends apparently) last time I called was Wednesday and they still haven't gotten back to me.

As long as you keep in mind the Impala SS of that gen is FWD, and the G8 is RWD, G8 also came with either a V6 or a V8 . So keep those in mind

Not a fan of that gen of Impala personally. Been dailying one for the last few years. The fit and finish just isn't there for the price IMO

I'd keep my eye out for a XWD 9-3 , either an Aero or the 2.0T would bring a lot of fun for the price

Progress of my built 1.9:

image3.thumb.jpeg.1343660bf840f502a713845106b1dfab.jpeg

IMG_1546.thumb.jpg.0990071b71ab90de5349f9be27aa7812.jpgimage1.thumb.jpeg.9af93a161d6e7bfa2d67d3cd29e0801e.jpegimage2.thumb.jpeg.94d2d0f33df0f56be4bd2c736cab7c1f.jpeg

Work done to block by Scroggins Machine:

Decked .004"

Overbore to 84mm and Hone

Hot Tank and Magnaflux

Crank was cleaned and lightly polished, using STD size bearings

Cost for the machine work was $450.

I haven't had much time to work on it, but so far I have filed the Wiseco rings to a .017" end gap on the top ring, .019" second ring. I've put the rings on the pistons and installed the Eagle connecting rods to the Supertechs. Sore thumbs from those wrist pin clips :(

Tomorrow I am putting the block back on the stand and finishing the rotating assembly. I was waiting on that Wiseco ring compressor since I have had poor luck with those 'universal' ring compressors. These rings were not cheap either -_- There's still a lot of things I need to get, totaling about $750 still to have it ready to drop in. But the engine in my car is still running okay after fixing the vacuum leaks, so I've bought some time..

Still have to get:

Boundary oil pump gears

Gates water pump

Cometic .040" MLS head gasket

Mazda OEM engine gasket set

VS855 valve springs

Alternator, small accessories, etc.

And speaking of valve springs, I'm dropping off the cylinder head at Scroggins on Monday, I have it all apart but like I said before I don't really have time especially with a cylinder head lol and I'd rather let someone more experienced than me do it especially with how much power it is going to make.

Appreciate any feedback, let me know what y'all think of the build :D
