Car Enthusiast Club [Now Motorcycle friendly!] - First thread to 100k! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

same tho. I almost got a Celica instead of the Accord. SO glad I did. 2ZZ is awesome, but my J30 is too. the accord is a much better daily. almost the same MPG, way nicer, more storage, quieter ride, still good handling, much nicer interior, etc.

accord is a better daily for sure. Totally agree. 2zz is an engine fit for a toy and that's exactly what it's used in... toys (besides the corolla/matrix, but that was about the only exception). they still use that same engine in some Lotus'es I think.. might be wrong

Accord is kinda expensive tho. All honda's are... idk why. reputation for just being a good car usually I guess. Just stinks when you see a manual trans civic/accord thats been all beat up or riced or something and it's still $6k.. like bruh I'll give you $1000 for it so I can undo what you did -_-

talking about 2ZZ corollas ... idk why but i remembered that these things exist ... and i kinda want one (not the supercharged one tho )

These corollas are rated to like 30MPG ... if event hat

From what i understand the blowing up of oil pumps happen when you rev it past the factory fuel/spark cut which was at like 8600RPM for the highest revving versions of the 2zz?

we didn't get that corolla here. But I want it xD. thing is probably a little riot with that 2zz. it looks so much better than the 2zz corolla we got here:

Though I will admit, this one does have more room and is probably a better daily. lol

Two thousand dollars for the transmission rebuild in labor only. And thats just the estimate. The latest place I called isn't even sure if they can do it.

At least it's an actual number. The guy before this wouldnt even give me an estimated price.

i found one somewhat localish (more like a 6 hr drive) one. stickshift v6 too, only 3500, all it needs are front rotors apparently https://reno.craigslist.org/cto/d/sun-valley-2006-honda-accord-v6-exl/6879042666.html

would pick it up if it wasn't a coupe.

I cant say I'm all that surprised by that price. The vast majority of shops don't want to open up transmissions, they simply replace them and send the trans to specialists.

I was hoping for a grand. $850 is what he told me thinking it was just pulling out an old one and switching in a new transmission. Waiting for him to call me back on an updated price

I didn't read the whole article but may I just note that YOU CAN GET THE "EXECUTIVE PACKAGE" ON AN M3 CS WHICH IS MEANT TO BE A "HARDCORE" M3? Why bother adding an "Executive Package" (or even better, why bother MAKING THIS AVAILABLE FOR THE CS) when the CS doesn't have a center console nor the dual-zone climate control?

the Corolla T-Sport ... I think there was a version that was available with a superchaged 2ZZ IIRC ... 225hp

but i mean we did get a 4 door hatch and a sedan and a wagon as well ... iirc All had the option to have a 2ZZ

the 2 door hatch just looks the best IMO ... and the USDM sedan > EUDM sedan

people don't really build transmissions anymore I guess...

At this point I would get on forums and see if you can find someone who does. You're going to pay for it though I bet. might even have to remove your trans and ship it somewhere.

This is concerning for when I eventually will have to rebuild a miata trans.. I mean there will only be a ton of them for so long... if people keep blowing them up like they do because they attach them to 300 ft/lb engines and think they can take it and as it gets harder to find one with low miles this becomes an issue.... the trans swaps available aren't really that modern either.. Some older bmw transmissions but that's about it :/

There's a dude in Florida that does it, and a few places like Mountune offer the rebuild service, but the rebuild service through Mountune includes buying the parts from them so their estimate of $1800 is including parts which I already have.....

If these "transmission specialist" mechanics dont back out on me, i might try looking into seeing if anyone has a spare engine support and transmission jack i can borrow for a few weekends. That would save me about half, but I'm not crossing my fingers that I'll be able to find one on such short notice.

well you want someone who you know wont screw up your transmission either.. they already told you they weren't sure if they could do it -- do you really want to risk that? iirc @warmmilk had a friend or something who had a miata transmission rebuilt and it ended up feeling like a marshmallow was how he described the result.

gotta find someone who knows what their doing or you trust they will "figure it out" properly rather than just simply guessing as people unfortunately do way too often nowadays :(

Ok for one.. the MR2 spyder will not do 40 on the highway under normal circumstances with a 1zz.. much less a 2zz

two... it has zero storage space.. not exactly a corolla replacement

three.. I knew about the converter issue on those and the piston oil return holes clogging causing the oil consumption, didn't know about anything else. a lot of 1ZZ's even with oil consumption still get pretty high up there in miles tho. surprisingly reliable engine despite it's issues.

four... the 2ZZ gets worse economy than the 1ZZ lol.. and requires premium fuel due to the higher compression. thing screams tho. if you make it scream too much they like to blow up their oil pumps though, and if you make them scream around corners, they didn't have enough baffling with the stock pan so it would oil starve :/

I've put a lot of research into 1zzs/2zzs due to having a corolla originally with a 1st gen 1zz

If you do the 6th speed with a 6th gear swap you can cruise at much lower RPM and the gas mileage goes way up. Swap the 1zz pan on the 2ZZ and it helps with the oil issue, I'm nearing on being able to comfortably do a lateral G and getting worried.

website is bad at search results links, but looks like you can buy a used trans for sub 1k...  unless you know of someone thats good at rebuilding your specific transmission (like all the evo trans specialists, except for your car) buying a low mileage used one is usually a better option

good while you're in there mod is the clutch... I suggest using synthetic fluids even tho all the forum fanboi's will swear by the ford motorcraft stuff.  typically amsoil, although my latest fluid is Royal Purple (overall not a fan of the company) but my trans shift sooooo butter smooth... question now is how long will this hold up.  my last was Redline and it was good for about a year and a half including a bunch of track days.

thats cause your accord is often raided for engine swaps (and they also take the trans)...  nobody really swaps the focus st engine or trans into something else.  simple lesson in supply and demand.

I had a friend suggest a used transmission, but the thing is all the used ones have the same shitty synchronizer gears that are in the one I have right now, so there's no guarantee they wont break randomly (2nd, 3rd and 4th are most common)

I've been debating this, I remember bouncing the idea off @bcredeur97 and he came back with I should stick to "low stage" clutch and flywheels since I'll never go over 400ftlb torque which is fair, but it's around another $1k for a low weight flywheel and upgraded clutch. My wallet already hurts 😂 I also worry as little bit about chatter. I know you can get that with higher level clutches andd flywheels, but I couldnt find anyone that had used the one I was looking at

My wallet already hurts 😂 I also worry as little bit about chatter. I know you can get that with higher level clutches andd flywheels, but I couldnt find anyone that had used the one I was looking at

SPEC Clutch + Lightweight Flywheel

are there options for better synchro's in the aftermarket?  I guess I just assumed you'd be rebuilding back to oem spec...  if the 2k rebuild option includes the improved parts that may be worth it.  and if someone makes those parts, they prolly know how to rebuild the transmission...

as far as while your in there clutch, not even necessarily upgrading.. oem clutches are usually pretty cheap (as long as you don't buy them from the dealer).  so unless you have super low miles, might be worth just getting a new clutch.  if you're looking to upgrade, I'm more of a fan of light weight 1 pc steel flywheels over a bolted together aluminum.  its rare, but you do see them fail occasionally.  a steel flywheel (ACT makes good steel 1pc flywheels) might be a couple lb heavier but the piece of mind is worth it to me.  and they're usually cheaper.  if you stay with the stock flywheel, make sure to get it resurfaced, even if you're going to a new oem clutch.

my main reasoning is so that you don't kill yourself everyday with the car's clutch, that way you can still daily drive and enjoy it rather than it just become a pain and a car you never want to drive. not to mention if you ever go to sell the car... people will feel that hard to drive clutch and not want to buy the car from you...
