Car Enthusiast Club [Now Motorcycle friendly!] - First thread to 100k! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

26 minutes ago, Drak3 said:

Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

I drive lots of things but those were for my Celica GT-4 WRC.  Most of the parts can be had cheap as they share parts across platforms but front brakes and suspension is unique to these cars and is worth a fortune.  The front brakes on this thing are massive especially for a 25yo car.  They are bigger than my 14 mustang with the brembo brake upgrade and bigger than the rotors on my full size truck w/ tow package, yet weighs half as much.

The rears are not nearly as bad as they are also used on the TT supras and some soarers.  And of course I had to go full race car and get the highest priced stuff from EBC (which is already costly) but not many other companies make brakes for this car.

A set of front lower control arms for this car also cost 2200£ (3300$cad) if you need to replace both sides because of the super strut suspension this car uses in the front.

EBC is good shit. i want to use their rotors on my tahoe next time it gets brakes. Don't want to use their pads though. great pads- i just dont want the dust. I tolerated it on my s10 but dont want to deal with it on a nicer vehicle. Thinking Brembo ceramic pads on ebc rotors.

@JokerProduction I forgot- I also put their shit on my grandpa's procharged ram. He was always warping his front rotors over and over again. Yellowstuff pads and their USR slotted rotors- no more warping.

I'm looking into a Nissan Quest but...

https://huntsville.craigslist.org/cto/d/decatur-2000-nissan-quest-gle/6857791993.html

...who the fuck badge swaps a Nissan Quest, but who else only does it in an incomplete fashion? It's got the Villager front end and wheels but the Quest badging and the Nissan interior.

Funny enough, this Quest does look fully loaded. I wonder how much it'd cost to get the Nissan Quest front end and the wheels off of a Quest rather than a Villager.

They're asking $1750 with 275 thousand miles. Motherfucker thinks hes got something good on his hands.

There's an eventual point where minivans tend to bottom out, and from what I've seen, most bottom out at $1000-2000 with a ton of miles.

Funny enough, I've been finding a number of Quests with leather but not many other vans with it. I wonder if it was the cheapest van to option up like that.

That's honestly what I'm thinking, but the fact that it's also got the Villager wheels kinda perplexes me.

It's funny, I've been driving my E36 M3/4/5 a lot lately instead of the SS. The S52 is just a pretty nice daily driving and still entertaining motor even in bone stock boring mode.

90% of the thrills of the SS with double the fuel economy, on my commute at least. It's definitely not a fast car anymore but it's not slow either, and man....I missed hydraulic steering, no skipshift, and cable throttle. It's making me want to keep it instead of sell it.

It's also time to get the other S54 swapped E36 M3 through smog again, so next week or two I'll un-mothball it and play the header swap game...

Gears Skipped for Fuel Economy

I still find it fucking hilarious that GM puts skip-shift on performance cars with a stick. At the very least, allow the user to disable it.

That is weird, maybe they were also damaged in an accident or the accident so they just did the whole set? I'm not crazy about those cars, they do run a along time but the engine is kind of a pain to work on. Injectors and distributors are common failures and cause weird issues that can be hard to pin down.

how the hell would that work on a stickshift? would it yank the gear out of your hand and move it to a better gear?

i hear those things perform way worse than competitors at the time. like in a competition with 4 other competitors during its run at the time, it placed dead last.

I don't know about the GM world but on my manual 2012 mustang it had skip shift "feature".  Pretty much never enabled with my driving style.  The only time it engaged was shifting out of 1st at light throttle and under 3k rpms.  A message would pop up on the dash and you would be physically locked out of going into anything but 4th gear.  It never effected me enough to disable it but for the mustangs all it took was pulling the shifter console up and unplugging harness to the little actuator.  Lots on the forums did this and it didn't throw any codes or have any negative effects.

Perform in what metric? It's a mid to late 90's minivan, there was no performance.

It's a thing that comes from the late 1980s because fuel economy at any cost was a must. Basically, the car forces you to go from 1st gear to 4th gear if it doesn't see that you're driving quick or with any sort of urgency, i.e. if you're accelerating pretty slowly.

Bullshit those bulbs do 6000 Lumen, maybe as a pair before thermal droop and probably not even then. If you can ID the chips and check the current draw you can see the wattage they're being driven at and math out the actual lumen output, I'd say in the neighborhood of 1800-2100 lumen actual per bulb before they get hot and drop output due to thermals. Just like a CPU, a LED is a diode and sheds waste heat, the more heat the less the output and the shorter the life span.

Its sooo common with Automotive LED's that they just spew off giant numbers.  They just look at the max wattage of the chip from the spec sheet and completely disregard what the driver is actually sending to them.  I bought some 224W lightbars for my truck but when actually measured they pulled 72W regardless of what voltage I threw at them because they have CC drivers.

That being said I bought some LED bulbs for the GT4 that showed up today.  Had one burnt out foglight and both parking lights were done.  Fog lights are kinda neat they are both white and amber and switch everytime you cycle power to them.  It works out good since its an older car and gives you full manual control of lighting.  Not any brighter than stock.

Parking lights are RGB and have tons of modes.  Needed to replace them because there the only lights on the front that flash when you lock/unlock otherwise there pretty pointless.  Still rocking the 55w HID till they need replacing.
