Here's where the "Big three" get weird. GM owns Chevy and GMC, both make similar vehicles under different "brands."

You know the meme from The Office?

Now I know who all the brands in my country learned from. There's 10 brands of milk and dairy products but they're all made by the same factory, just as there's at least 20 different soda and bottled water brands all made by Coca-Cola, all newspapers and news channels are owned by the same group, all ISPs are owned by the same company who doesn't invest a single cent on infrastructure since the 90s, and so on.

The illusion of free choice.

You're not wrong to think about it as you do but it's a bit complicated, yet simple too in that when you say "GM make" here, you think about all the brands under the GM name.
For reference, this is what GM was and is today: General Motors - Wikipedia

"If you ever need anything please don't hesitate to ask someone else first"..... Nirvana
"Whadda ya mean I ain't kind? Just not your kind"..... Megadeth
Speaking of things being "All Inclusive", Hell itself is too.

I'm fairly certain the database file isn't encrypted at all or that anything to do with this software is encrypted at all. One time we had an issue where it would open then close itself. Called up their support line, turned out there was an internet outage and the authentication server was down. Work around? Disable the internet, open it, wait a minute for it to time out on the phone home handshake, then turn the internet back on. It fails in a default to run without auth from the license server. I will say this, their support is pretty good, call in and get a call back within the hour or sooner. They'll just remote in and fix stuff most of the time, guy always seems thrilled when it's our shit broke cause we have decent machines with SSD's that are fairly fast. Last time it broke a few weeks ago he couldn't figure it out. We narrowed it down to a windows update breaking something with C++ in Windows maybe, that was the last update besides defender definitions. Did a restore back to before the update, reinstalled the update, no problems since. What's nice is....it's always the same guy. I think it's like a 4 person company lol.

wow lol. Some people just make stuff without a single concern in the world about security. Always amazes me. I guess most of the time they get away with it because no one really targets them, or has a reason to.

I like to joke when we get a call from someone to our helpdesk, and we end up remoting in and their PC's are really slow, that they can literally go buy an SSD for $50 or so(or less!) and save a ton of money from us, since we charge hourly(though in 15 min increments) for the remote support session. It's literally a win/win: Less time our helpdesk people spend miserably waiting for things to load(it's so frustrating when you literally live one loading bar to the next), and also their support sessions are shorter, so we end up charging them less, and also, we can take more calls that day, makes helpdesk more efficient.

Granted, they'd probably ask us to install the SSD for them, which will cost them. But likely still worth it in the long run. People with the slow hard drive computers likely need to swap their drive anyway just to get a fresh drive in their system before it dies...

I'm all for being cheap, using your old hardware, just cleaning out the dust and putting a new SSD in it. In most cases that's PLENTY for office work. (though maybe not soon due to software support of old hardware (thanks Microsoft!).

just don't understand the "im cheap im doing nothing" stance, especially considering time spent with support phone calls.

I made sure the new office PC had a SSD, sadly I couldn't predict Win11 requirements so it's an i5 6500. Shop PC is an i5 4570. Neither are blazing fast but they boot quickly and have very little perceptible lag when doing things, feeling snappy and fast is more important than actually being powerful. At least for an office PC. In a couple years when 11 is mandatory I'll make sure both are upgraded to like 8th-10th gen stuff on the cheap, 6 cores is PLENTY for office and web browsing.

You know, for laughs I'll try to open the database file in like notepad or something. Honestly I don't think IT security really existed outside the government and military when this software was built, likely in the late 80's or early 90's. It all works fine most of the time.

I am really hoping that eventually Windows puts down their foot and says you can't use a HDD as a boot disk. Tried explaining to the IT guy that everyone on HDDs is gonna complain, but naw SSDs are apparently "way too expensive", and that my i5 system will be plenty fast.

I bought 2 250GB SSD's (no dram) for like $35 a few weeks ago on sale. Don't specifically need them right now but I have them for when I do lol. It's idiotic to not have a SSD now a days. Boss bought a new laptop with a 12th gen i5, some ram n stuff, and a NVME boot drive. He's absolutely blown away by how fast it starts up and how fast it finishes updates. His old laptop was some god awful AMD CPU from the bulldozer era with a HDD and by the time it was done installing one update it was 3 updates behind lol, he'd boot it up a couple days before he needed to use it in hopes it would be ready to use and done running updates and stuff by then.

My first SSD was a 256gb Samsung 850 Pro. I think it was about 300 dollars, maybe more. I was on a 2500k and had boot times of sub 5 seconds on Windows 7. Now with a 980 Pro that smokes the throughput of that 850 Pro I have 20+ second boot times. Windows says my BIOS time is 18.8 seconds.

I'm not sure if its ASUS (was an issue on my 8700k system) or some scuffed software, but its unacceptable. My Razer blade 14 boots near instantly from a restart.

Its still the same company ... its just gotten different ownership, no company is the same compared to what they could have or did make in the 60s ... kinda need to adapt with the times if you want to stay afloat.. hence why every supercar company is starting to make SUVs and/or crossovers
