85C Too Hot for a GTX 1080?

TechyInAZ

So I've got one of the worst performing GTX 1080 cards (cooling wise) on the market today which is the GTX 1080 AMP! Edition.

Even with fans at 85-90% GPU temps go all the way up to 85C when gaming at 4k-5k resolutions.

Is it fine for the temperature to be so hot?

It's fine for the card but seems a little high for that cooler? What case do you have? Are the fans all spinning?

See my specs in my signature.

Doesn't matter what the case fans spin at (though they do spin at 850-950rpm, twin 140mm intakes). I even took the front panel completely off and the temps didn't even change, it's that bad of a cooler.

well it's not fine for the temperature to be high , but the card will survive. But really when a cards cooling is actually working well it shouldn't really ever go over 70.

even the most terrible r9 290s don't get up to 85c with their fans at 100%.

So for a Strix card with their open air coolers, if you're seeing temperatures this high it could be due to a lack of airflow in the case.

If the fans on the card and blowing as fast as they can but the surrounding air just as hot, the card will continue to get hotter because the heat is just going round and round in the case.

Do you have a photo of your rig that shows your case fans?

85C by itself is no trouble but it is the circumstance WHY it is 85C that is interesting

The question is where the temp limit is on that card. The higher the limit the more headroom for GPU boost to increase the clock speed and also the voltages. What is the GPU core frequency? If it is higher than the advertised speed then your card think it have headroom and pushes the clock speeds as much as it can.

Try taking your front panel off your case. I have the regular Enthoo Evolv ATX and they are horrible at air flow so I bet you have an issue with airflow in the case because of poor case design.

There are two 140mm fans in the front. Again as I said, I took the whole front panel off and the temps still didn't change. If you want I can retest with the fans at max RPM if needed.

infigo, this is with the temp and power limit maxed out, if i keep it at normal, the card just cuts clock speeds so much it goes all the way down to the physical boost clock of 1820ish mhz.

FYI. TEMPS only happen to be this high at 4k or higher resolutions. I've tested 1440P just as hard and it stays around 79C. But I could be getting a 4k panel in the future, so I want a card that can hold 4k just fine.

Just checked out your other thread, this is your solution.

Alphacool makes gpu all in one units, not just the block as well.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

I've already looked at that video 5 times LOL. Unfortunately Alphacool discontinued that cooler a year ago so I can't get it. I would of definitely gotten that cooler if it was available. :sob:

Already did that, and shockingly the temps didn't change. I've never seen that happen before on any card or any cooler as a matter of fact.

Sounds like some bad Thermal Paste then. Have you tried taking it out and repasting it?

Rrrrg I'd really hate to take the card apart, i've never re-pasted a GPU before. I might do that, i'll let you know if i do or not.

Hate to say it but that might be the only option left.

Everything else seems pretty solid. I don't believe you have any air flow problems.

So it could be that the thermal paste is either of lower quality or drying out.

If you get some quality paste, something like Icy Diamond or Arctic Silver, you should see measurable improvements.

Get one of these instead then, they have a vrm plate that connects to the loop as well for full cover style blocks.

Interesting, I think I found the problem:

I might try thermal paste later after testing this out:
