Windows 10 uses too much VRAM

Nothing open and Windows uses 800MB of VRAM.
That's a lot because the GTX 1050 only has 2GB of VRAM and it's pissing me off.
Does anyone has a solution for this?

Not using windows would be the only option, or buying a gpu with more vram. If the gaming performance isnt suffering, then everything is ok.  Just run your games at full screen so that it doesn't render the windows UI elements.

I think it was a new update, the 1060 3gb can't mine ether anymore ven though the dag is under 3gb because of a windows update. My 970m and 750 ti's usage is pretty low. Check if you have some programs open with gpu acceleration.

When I had the GTX 750 TI 2gb, it only used about 200-300mb of VRAM. I think it simply depends how much VRAM your card has, so it allocates that VRAM so it's ready to use for when an application needs it.

MY 1070 also idles at 800mb. Did you update to the newest windows update, that increased vram usage?

Buying a new GPU is currently not an option for me. It does affect games, 3D applications only have 1.1GB of VRAM left to use, and the GPU has to do more work to swap out the textures which furthermore increase the load on GPU.

No program is opened as mentioned. Discord in the background has this option off.

My 970 idles with less than 300mb usage.

is your GPU overclocked? running at 45% fan speed, 23% load  and 1900mhz at idle is weird

I don't think the update is the problem, because my laptop doesn't have this problem.

Yes it is overclocked, custom fan curves, and again, nothing is currently opened.

Don't worry about it. Using extra vram isn't bad. It will move the extra to system ram or just not use it if a game needs it.

I would investigate where the 23% load is coming from in your processes tab in task manager, any one system  process causing it?

It's gone when I noticed it.

Is there any evidence of this having actually affected your games?

Yes, games run fine for half an hour until there's no more VRAM left to use and the game stutters while it's swapping the textures. All settings on low. Sometimes I have to restart the game because it's taking too long to change the textures in VRAM.

Which game are you testing with?

Witcher 3, Subnautica, Cities:Skylines.
All on low. All start stuttering after a while. 2GB VRAM is enough to play these games on low, not 1.1GB

Have you verified that the full amount of VRAM is being used while playing those games?

Are you using multiple monitors without SLI?

Also, game VRAM usage does not climb over a 30m period for me.  It starts at pretty much the level that it stays at for the whole gaming session.

  • 5 months later...

what a bunch of idiots. no one considered to think that his gpu usage is at 23% and 800 mb in idle because he has a bitcoiner installed on his system without his permission. probably bundleware that tagged along with some software he downloaded. a proper cleanup with malwarebytes and adwcleaner should fix the issue. my gtx 1050 ti idles at 141 mb usage
