project: trinity (updating this so that it doesnt look stupid)

thehardwarehacker

so, this is my first real project, as well as my first time in this LTT sub-forum. the other day i got the first part of what im tentatively calling project F.E.M. standing for File (nas, and personal cloud use) Encoding (handbreak) minecraft (server for myself, and nephews to play on)

side note, if anyone that reads this thread has a better name to suggest for the project, im all ears.

moving on, this is what i received from ebay, a xeon E5-2640V2.

im slated to get the mobo next week, so ill post another update then.

i actually like 'the rainy cloud' as a name idea.

next big part of the build has arrived.

large.20180227_233930080_iOS.jpg.edee4fab40d9d24cae55a1ef7ca46ba4.jpg

it felt like i was waiting for forever for this to get to my doorstep, but its finally here and intact. no i didnt put the xeon in it already, it came with a 3820 included, that ill find a way to flip.

so now that this is out of the way, the next update will be in...maybe a week and a half, or 2 weeks, i have yet to get/ order the last few parts, but im not to that point yet.

i also came up with a name for it on sunday, which is a little ironic, considering im a Christian, and this word is significant to us, also it works because the machine obviously has 3 main uses.

introducing: project, trinity.

main/gaming system: intel core i7 5930K, 16GB Gskill ddr4, asus X99 deluxe, 2 titan X's in SLI, corsair AX860 PSU, noctua NH-d15, samsung 512 PRO SSD, 2+3 seagate HDD's, blu-ray ODD, corsair graphite 780t.   game capture system: AMD FX 8350 BE, 16GB ram (left over parts from torn down system), asus ROG crosshair V formula-z, GTX 770 SC, avermedia live gamer HG capture card, elgato HD60 s external usb3 capture device, OCZ 700w, cryorig M9a, kingston 250GB SSD(left over part from torn down system), seagate 1TB internat HDD, seagate backup plus 5TB USB 3 extrenal drive, corsair carbide 200R.

i finally got the 'last 3' parts for the server in. but, im actually not ready to build just yet. the keen eyed out there may have seen already, but the cooler says 'AM4', and the motherboard/ CPU are LGA 2011. so yes, i ordered a D15 the wrong mounting hardware, but as im typing this, the 2011 kit has already been ordered, and im hoping, shipped, and delivered by the end of this week, or start of next week. silver lining, if i switch to an AM4 build at some point, i already have the proper mounting hardware.

that all aside, i can now test to make sure the used parts all work, and possibly work on setting it up OS, and software/service wise.

that should do it for this update, back again next week. (i think)

2 worthy updates.

1st, its test bench style assembled, and working stably.

2nd, i ended up installing ubuntu on it.

i originally wanted to put linux mint on it, but, getting minecraft server up and running on it turned out to be more of a headache than i anticipated. plus all the how-to's, and other tutorials were done on ubuntu anyway.

now that minecraft server works, im trying to get tonido to launch. i dont know what is preventing it, but the start command doesn't seem to launch the application. ill just have to continue working on that later, because for now, success.

time for the next update. the P9 motherboard just refused to take a bios update, no matter what voodoo i tried, even asus support was stumped trying to figure it out. because of this, the 8core xeon, wouldn't work in the board. so i ended up ordering and X79 sabertooth, which coincidentally, came with a 6 core xeon. after a  quick test boot to confirm it works, to my surprise, and a lot of delight, i see that it has an up to date BIOS. one less thing to worry about doing.

booop. she lives!

now, its just a matter of getting it into the case, and getting all the things to work.

just realized, i havent updated in a while. the hardware is now, id say 95% in place, i still need drives for the 'NAS' part of this.

large.20180424_223445001_iOS.jpg.bf4ff16a854fcf8118ec83daae9833b0.jpg

so, after much, much, and much more testing, i had to switch over to windows 7 to get this to work, at least in an OS i understand

large.20180424_233949863_iOS.jpg.0a17de206f5f0b5882a56c83a1b92899.jpg

that all said, my minecraft server works, handbreak can operate really fast, and local file (and personal cloud, mostly) is setup.

the next update should be LOTS of drive storage, but thats not for a while still.

main/gaming system: intel core i7 5930K, 16GB Gskill ddr4, asus X99 deluxe, 2 titan X's in SLI, corsair AX860 PSU, noctua NH-d15, samsung 512 PRO SSD, 2+3 seagate HDD's, blu-ray ODD, corsair graphite 780t.   game capture system: AMD FX 8350 BE, 16GB ram (left over parts from torn down system), asus ROG crosshair V formula-z, GTX 770 SC, avermedia live gamer HG capture card, elgato HD60 s external usb3 capture device, OCZ 700w, cryorig M9a, kingston 250GB SSD(left over part from torn down system), seagate 1TB internat HDD, seagate backup plus 5TB USB 3 extrenal drive, corsair carbide 200R.
