YouTube... Is YouTube still relevant?

Lately I have noticed a trend with YouTube.

 

To be clear I don't bother with other streaming platforms because it is just expensive. How can it be expensive? Well consider for a moment that on some platforms one has to pay subscriptions per channel. Lets say a subscription is $5 US. If you have more then one subscription The price does go up. Now adding other entertainment platforms into the mix and the amounts really do become scary. Especially if one considers that all one gets is entertainment.

 

This is why I enjoy YouTube because for the most part it is free. Yet lately even content creators that earn thousands of dollars don't put out a lot of content anymore. Normally a video a day is now a video a week if that. What changed? Considering that they have secondary income streams that do well I find the phenomena interesting enough to write about.   

 

I don't know what the motivation behind the phenomena is. To be clear there really is a lot that goes into producing content but that said, if the creator considers it to be a job then consistency should a priority.

 

Now many content creators over the years said that YouTube subscribers isn't important. Many more said that due to YouTube changes that they don't earn as much. This may be true. I am not a content creator I am a content consumer to be clear.

 

But lately as a content consumer I find myself wondering if YouTube is still worth it. Without mentioning names here, I can say that a large number of content creators basically push out less to no content on a weekly bases and over even a monthly bases. Out of nearly 200 subscriptions I am now down to less then 18 Subscriptions. Now of that 200 Subscriptions it is to be mentioned that many of them have secondary income streams including viewer support via third parties. Some third parties allow us to see how much the content creator makes on a monthly base. Based on that number I have to say that some of them do really badly but others do really really really well. Now this is excluding sponsorship, and merchandise.

 

So am I "a content consumer" complaining about nothing? Yes I am getting it for free!!! Or am I? The reality is no I am not getting it for free. The content may be free to access but internet access is not free. I pay for my internet access. Now most of the time that amount is negligible but other times it simply isn't the case. 

 

Thus I am back where I started. Do I keep my ISP that is charging me a lot for the data I use. Then go to a entertainment service pay for that and yes have more then one service because some shows can only be accessed on particular subscriptions. Or do I just go back to older platforms like satellite television or other such platforms That doesn't require a ISP. I personally never stopped buying DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. They are not as expensive anymore and the quality is really good. Is it better to spend money on these physical medias rather then using the internet as a entertainment platform?

 

This is the question I am confronted with today. To be clear uncap data isn't a thing where I live. We still pay per 1mb of data used. To be clear there was a time where I did made the choice to pay the ISP and use the data for YouTube as most creators did and still do a LOT to create PROPER content. But that said here I am writing this because a lot about 182 content creators don't bother anymore. Is that a YouTube problem? Maybe truth be told there is a lot happening that I and many others don't know about. So the possibility do exist.

 

That said I maybe reverting back to older platforms and starting to order a Box-set of a show that I enjoy. The reality is 'if' successful and financially strong channels on YouTube coudln't be bothered to stay consistent anymore then really they don't need us the viewers anymore.

 

At first I thought. Yea I am just full of it and I don't really know what is happening and I am just stupid. Then after talking to many many different people about this I realized I am not alone.

 

Thus I figured maybe it is a relevant topic? 

 

So what is your take on this? Do you still believe that having multiple subscriptions is worth it? Do you think YouTube is responsible for the sharp decline in content over all? 

 

Now I know I missed a TON of stuff while writing this. But this is more to give you the reader a insight into what I see. I would love to know what YOU SEE. WHAT YOU FEEL is happening.

I have unlimited data on my monthly subscription so I dont really care about what I watched, but individual content creators are facing more problems with recent policy changes. From what I heard, they are earning less and their vidoes dont pop up as much as those from big names even to people who subscribed to them but not the big names.

 

Facebook does even worse in this regard.

Quality over quality probably because one 10 min video thats gets 1 million views is about the same as four 3 min videos that each have 1 million views. also with youtube demonetization and seeing how little money they make and who youtube doesn't put good ads on majority or creators means money is scarce for those how create more edgy content, and also seeing how youtube is moving away from actual creators pushing movie trailers, and Late night with _______ over actual creators with its trending and home page is disheartening. And lastly just relevance on youtube moves fast for example 2 years ago in the summer of 2016 Leafyishere got 4 million subs in like 6 months but as youtube made a change to its algorithm it didn't recommend his content as much and put together with the controversy like Idubbz for etc his channel died as fast as it came up

 

Also subs don't matter because thats not who you make money so if you get 10 million subs you could still never make a penny if non of them watch your stuff, but they care about subs because if you get Auto unsubbed then its not in your sub box anymore.

Ex frequent user here, still check in here occasionally. I stopped being a weeb in 2018 lol

TV has even more strict rules but I do agree Youtube is quickly becoming too far from what it used to. Around 2013/14 when they updated everything so you needed a Google+ account to have Youtube is when it all started to go downhill. Ever since then it's been new policies, harsh punishment to creators that don't deserve it and promotion of ones like Logan Paul and weird fetish Kid's channels, and advertiser friendly garbage. Someone could easily create a Youtube replacement with the original rules and steal a lot of users.

Except it won't. The whole Youtube deal is just PR after the WSJ reported on it. You can see can Coke, Pepsi, Ford, and other advertisers plastered everywhere during news events of mass shootings on TV and on websites reporting about it. They even show up on Youtube channels like Fox, CNN, MSN and other news channels. So it's all stupid and slowly killing itself because of it. If you kill off all the content creators then you won't have any traffic left. It's only a matter of time unless something drastic happens

People who suffered the most by the whole WSJ thing were independent journalists, political and social commentators.

Noticed the last month kindof the same as @oldSock
My inbox is quite empty on some days, a few months back it was much more filled each and every day. Some YouTubers like LTT just exaggerated things much and put quantity over quality, to a point that I stopped watching LTT videos tbh because it was simply bad puns and jokes all over the place and not techy anymore. Sure tech was in it but not really informativ anymore, not why i subscribed. LTT is a mild example, there are way worse examples out there, and I don't even understand why so many people watch so much shit nobody cares about (objectively speaking) and it's all over my place in my video suggestions.

Some of the youtubers I watch for god's sake still pursue the quality stand point and don't care about clickbaity titles, and if they are not pushing a video every day, I'm happy if I get the quality. Some even managed to build a huge channel without much clickbaity titles and just plain simple thumbnails (looking at you, Doug), and I don't understand why there are not more people out there. Or at least we don't find them because youtubes algorithm hinders them to grow cause no clickbait.

But, to get philosophical, I guess that's a problem of our time - everythings getting polarized, especially the debates and the general society. If even a guy makes at the top of a country and needs to write himself a notice to listen to other people and have empathy because the only thing he can and cares about is polarizing, this is a bad sign for the whole world. we loose the middle ground between black and white positions. And IMO, that's the picture, youtube as a mirror of society provides.

But the principle of the matter, that news reporting tragic events is the same as generally agreed to be objectionable content doesn't make sense to me as to why advertising should be pulled.

 

All in all though, the biggest reason I don't think is so much if YouTube is relevant, but that it has no real competitor in the US.

How about creating an alternative Directory and Search for YouTube.  You still see YouTube adds; however, you avoid YouTube content trimming, recommendations, political and theme sterilization of the content providers.  With the exception of kids, which I believe the parents should have control of the content they view versus YouTube, I want to see what is available and make the judgements on my own of what is valid content.  I believe I can avoid issues with my eyes open versus my head in a proverbial censorship hole.
