Samsung unveils 30TB 2.5" SSD

Samsung has today unveiled their new 30TB 2.5" SSD (PM1643).

It's a SAS Drive with read speeds of 2100MB/s and write speed of 1700MB/s.

 

It's gonna cost you a penny or two and it will be perfect for your new NAS.

 

It's great that we finally get to see large SSD's, sadly it will take time for them to viable options instead of using HDD's for normal users.

HDD only goes to 16TB in 3.5" form factor I believe? That's a way to get more storage in the same space.

those look pretty thicc for 2.5" drives

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Only proper enterprise NAS solutions support SAS, so I wouldn't call this a perfect NAS drive. While SAS supports SATA, the other way around is a no go :) 

 

They would be pretty neat for read intensive workloads in servers, though.

Doesn't that thickness destroy the point of it being 2.5"? :P

Very nice anyhow, though I doubt I'll be able to afford one. Personally I'd never use such a large drive too much risk involved for me, though in a datacenter environment I can certainly see it being awesome :D

The write IOPs are actually better than it looks, that's the proper conditioned spec not burst. Most high end server SATA SDDs only do around 15000-30000 write IOPs so 50000 is actually rather good.

 

Here's the Samsung 863a spec:

RANDOM WRITE (4KB, QD32)
1,920 GB: Up to 28,000 IOPS

 

Samsung 963 NVMe

RANDOM WRITE (4KB, QD32)

1,920 GB: 40,000 IOPS

 

Samsung 1725a NVMe

RANDOM WRITE (4KB, QD32)

6.4 TB:180,000 IOPS

 

Nice thing about SAS and SATA is you can put them in a much larger array compared to NVMe, because you need 48 30.72TB SSD in a single tray/server.

Because SSD's don't benefit much from being larger other than being a larger 'box' to put more chips in.  It's like two 1 cubic meter boxes vs one 2 cubic meter boxes.  Both hold 2 cubic meters.  So you can stack up 2.5" SSDs instead of 3.5" larger single SSDs, except you can fit a 2.5" into a more compact space if needed and that means more flexibility.

1U servers are already cramped for space. If you can squeeze in a few extra drives by using 2.5” then it’s a better option. Also they block less airflow and they obviously didn’t need the extra space to get a ton of storage in there. I’m also wondering if having too many NAND chips on a single controller will have negative effects on random read/writes and it’s better to wait for larger chips than cramming a ton of smaller chips on a single PCB?

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

also there is a good change that there is no controller that can control that many nand chips
