Microsoft is turning off push notifications for Windows Phone 7.5 and 8.0

Microsoft is turning off push notifications for Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0 devices.

 

Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0 are both no longer supported and so Microsoft has decided to shut down their notification services.

 

This is what Microsoft had to say:

On February 20, 2018, Mobile Push Notification services will be turned off for Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0. Once this happens: Your phone will no longer receive notifications. Your phone will not receive additional live tile updates. The "Find my phone" feature will no longer locate your phone. Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0 have reached their end of support dates, and thus services for these versions of Windows will be discontinued over time

This means live tiles will no longer work on those devices and they will be stuck with app icons.

 

I'm not gonna lie, I've not recently seen a Windows Phone being used, let alone a WP 7.5 or WP 8.0 device being used.

 

I have seen one or two Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile phones being used in the wild somewhat recently.

 

Since I've started using Android I really actually like it and I don't think I'd ever go back to Windows on a Mobile Device in my hand unless it was a tablet running full Desktop Windows 10.

With M$ announcing the essential end of Windows Phone I've seen a cubic buttload of cheap Windows handsets hit the second hand market. Most of them even brand new in box (No Elite x3 unfortunately, I still want one!)

What I haven't seen are Windows Phone 7.5 handsets. Bunch of 520s, though, but they're so low spec they don't even count.

 

Shame, really. I liked my Lumias.

Windows 10 Mobile is supported through security patches and bug fixes but for not too much longer.

 

Probably until late 2019 at the very latest.

Not to support the idea of EoL of a product but why the hell MS made push notifications proxy to them? like why the hell something as simple as a whatsapp message needs to do that to work on WP? besides that they could data mine the data though...

 

speaking of which does android and ios work the same way? they proxy to apple and google i mean.

I think this is good. The support for these operating systems has ended already for a while, so this is an obvious step for Microsoft to take.

Offtopic: One thing that bothers me though is that they decided to end mainstream support for Windows 10 Mobile so early (december 2019), that's just sad .

Because if all apps would ping to another server whenever they wanted to, it would kill the battery of your device really quickly. iOS does this too, don't know about Android.

To clarify... Windows Phone 8.1 and Mobile 10 aren't affected.

Honestly, I highly doubt anyone has either phones. And if you happen to have 8.0, then just update to 8.1 (or 10 if your phone supports it)
