Intel discrete gpu prototype

Leaked images show Intel has begun to developed their own discrete video cards. Their very last discrete video card was like 10 years ago with their Intel i740.

The company's first 14 nm dGPU prototype, shown as a test-chip at the ISSCC, is a 2-chip solution. The first chip contains two key components, the GPU itself, and a system agent; and the second chip is an FPGA that interfaces with the system bus. The GPU component, as it stands now, is based on Intel's Gen 9 architecture, and features a three execution unit (EU) clusters. Don't derive numbers from this yet, as Intel is only trying to demonstrate a proof of concept. The three clusters are wired to a sophisticated power/clock management mechanism that efficiently manages power and clock-speed of each individual EU. There's also a double-clock mechanism that doubles clock speeds (of the boost state) beyond what today's Gen 9 EUs can handle on Intel iGPUs. Once a suitable level of energy efficiency is achieved, Intel will use newer generations of EUs, and scale up EU counts taking advantage of newer fab processes, to develop bigger discrete GPUs.

i mean, more competition is always nice in a monopolized market, tough do we really want intel to be the new contender? what are they gonna do, bring out GPU's with framebuffers only usable on select motherboards or in select chipsets?

the LGA2066 fiasco is still fresh in the back of my mind

You know AMD cards have higher TDP than their Nvidia competitors, right?

 

I'm not "for" either company, but specifically calling out Nvidia makes you look like a monster fanboy.

 

Plus... Intel is no better than Nvidia. If anything, they're worse. Look at Intel when AMD wasn't competitive. like... 3% performance increase per generation, and stuck on 4 cores with their consumer chips for almost 10 years

Nah, Nvidia rigs just don't run that hot.  Mine are both in cases and I'm seeing temps in the high 50s and low 60s during mining. 

 

Main rig, mining on both cards during normal use, only mining on the 1070 when I'm gaming on the 1080Ti..
Built inside a Define R5.  Dual 140mm intakes in the front, 140mm intake in the side, 140mm exhaust in the rear and 140mm exhaust in the top (rear-most moduvent removed).  There's 1.5 slots between the cards (the 1080Ti is a 2.5 slot card), the 1070 is mounted right above the PSU so it doesn't get as much air as I would like.

 

 


My old rig, mining 24/7 on all 3 cards
Built inside a HAF X, using only the 200mm intake fan on the side panel.  The rest of the fans are disconnected because they didn't affect the temps in any way.
The 1070s are plugged straight into the MoBo with 1 slot between them, the 1060 is hanging inside the 5.25" bays and connected via a riser card.

All fans on both rigs are either at 5V or coupled to the CPU temp, in which case they're at idle until the CPU hits 50°C

 

Pretty sure I could drop the temps by several °C if I were to put the cards in an open rack with a couple of 200mm fans blowing cold air onto them

Yeah I would love to see an Intel GPU. It would actually drive competition knowing Intel.

I wonder if any possible dGPU from Intel will have the same problem as the Intel 740: Excellent image quality, shit at everything else.

Glad to see they at least gotta prototype. I suspect their first GPU wont be anything special. While Intel stole the head of Radeon Group, they are still not known for GPU's. AMD (ATI) and Nvidia have years of R&D under their belt to get to where they are now. I mean besides the guy from Radeon Group do they have the expertise in house to be competitive in the GPU market? Who knows. I just hope they release a compelling enough product to get their foot in the door.

LOL, nvidia furnaces?  - my 3x Zotac 6GB AMP! edition 1060s in my mining rig are sitting at ~40 to 44C while clocked at 2123Mhz and mining all the time, fan speed is on ~40-ish, and ambient temp in my room is approx 18-22C most of the time... although I must say that the cooling on these are f'ing fantastic. I don't even have any other cooling that helps on my rig, except a 140mm noctua that's directed over the VRMs as I am using an AIO for CPU cooler.

It is, intentionally. It's equivalent to their gt3 designs with 72EUs that you'd find in iris graphics. 

But that's because it's a prototype. The EUs are functional and already in use in other designs. This is intended to test the other parts of a chip as much as the feasibility of the design.

Probably start a K skew for cpu overclocking. G skew for gpu overclocking. And last but not least B skew for overclocking the memory busses.
