Coincidentally similar Power Supply Units - Investigated

EnergyEclipse

Hello all!

Welcome to an all new research 'blog' - 'Coincidentally similar Power Supply Units Investigated'

In this series, I will be conducting my own investigations into those cheaply sold power supply units found on European sites such as ebuyer, Ebay UK, and more!

Sit back, relax, and read on and enjoy as we discover who makes these units once and for all!

Spoiler

What does this series showcase you might ask, and who really cares?

This 'blog' is going to likely consist for a few power supply units I have seen the infamous face of the brand re-badge scheme which occurs quite often as you dwindle the price tag ever further down, or the ones which simply are not worth the shame on the shoulders for any brands.

Now I do not know as much as many people on these forums when it comes to electronic devices such as computer switch mode power supply units. These are not as popular a discussion as something like a new CPU release or leak, and why is that you may ask? Well, they are quit dangerous, and there is every reason for you would not want to begin disassembling or prodding about with one like you may to do a Graphics card or so forth. Everything past the power supply unit will most typically be less than hazardous to work with, and does not require for people to have specialist equipment or knowledge to tinker with. It is similar to a car, you can mess around with the seating, heating, sound and so forth, but the engine is not something you'd pull a screwdriver out and tinker with for fun. In short, power supplies are not something physical to mess around with. But what fun is it if we can't figure out who makes the units you purchase in the first place? Who can we point the finger at when these bargain basement power supply units fail?

Enough talking for now, and let us begin our investigation.

PSUs:

'400w PSU ATX PC'

Lets start with a unit I can only describe as confusing. Now, can you not tell me that this unit does look awfully similar to this unit, if not the exact same?

http://www.akyga.com/products/1-power-supply-atx-ak-b1-400-400w.html

The two nameplate stickers look a little bit similar don't they now?

And the connections...

And the specifications.

What I'm pretty sure we're seeing here is two units, an unbranded OEM unit, and then a unit branded by 'Akyga'. These two units share the very much identical specifications, and an external glance shows that they are indeed on similar ground with each other. We must start somewhere, so I contacted Akyga. If you have a keen eye, something you have potentially realized is that they have two slightly different images of the back and the fan if you look closely on there website. So far I am awaiting there reply, but as soon as they reply I'll update the thread.

RESULTS:

After contacting Akyga, it appears as though my previous ideology around the two units was wrong. I emailed Akyga asking if they knew anything surrounding the unit, and stated it does look very similar to there unit. They email replied me back today, and the results are quite surprising:

Thank you very much for reporting us this situation.

Unfortunately, this is simply a violation of our copyright laws,

breaking all good market rules and we've already taken the right steps

to bring the right people to responsibility.

It is so sassy counterfeit of our product that even a part of our logo

was left becouse "professional power supply solution" it is an integral

part of one of our logo variants

Unfortunately I can not say you anything about the quality of this power

supply, whether it has any protections and whether it actually meets any

CE and RoHS standards.

They are a polish company, so I will excuse there slightly confusing English. It appears that the unit sold under company 'Maytrix' (The radioworld one) is actually a violation of copyright of Akyga xD I did not really expect that, and I kind of feel a little bad considering I hadn't expected to become a whistle blower all of a sudden... Regardless, I have at least uncovered one thing, not what I had desired, but it a result. Whilst we did not find out who makes both of the PSUs, we found who owns the copyright to it! (Sorry radioworld D:)

That is all for this power supply unit for now, and I hope you enjoyed this short investigation and learnt something from it. Lets hope we receive better luck with the next few units, and avoid becoming hunted down for suddenly becoming a whistleblower...

Depends on the load, when I built my 1st rig everyone was telling thermaltake litepower PSUs were junk but I bought one and worked for 10 years non-stop

And I assume you tested that it did in fact actually work with an oscilloscope? Ripple can kill components.

Or did it just power on without immediately exploding?

:)

or just search around for reviews on Kentek units
