how to make a FTP server

aries757

i've been tinkering with filezilla and WINSCP  because i want to make an ftp server to transfer files for a server i'm building soon , and i would just get some seperate parts i have laying around and make an NAS

but...

i;m not the owner of the server, and we need an ftp server to transfer the game files....

and it would make everything easy

so if you could help instruct me on how to make a ftp server or link something that'd be great

i already looked at all the ones that were semi useful but non helped really.

Do you need ftp? Id stay away, its not secure and not great.

There are lots of guides to setting up with ftp on your os, have you tried them?

Id also look at nextcloud

There should be a numerical code next to the 'Connection failed' which can indicate what the issue is.

Could be something as simple as Windows Firewall or IPTables, and just needing that port opened. And dont forget about port forwarding on your router when it comes to testing your WAN connectivity.

As for security, ftp is pretty secure - especially if you use ftps (with an ssl) or my personal favorite, is to use Linux and create a user jail, and use sftp with rsa key authentication. You can also harden it with something like MaxAuthTries, and AllowUser/DenyUser rules. There are plenty of Intrusion Systems out there for linux as well. And security is an ongoing thing, not a install-and-forget-kinda-thing. Analyzing security logs periodically, and ensuring anything with an endpoint internet facing is up to date.

When i was running a gaming community, my FTP was on a seperate linux VM, which was mounted as a share to the game servers which added additional security. The only access users had to the actual gaming servers, was via a webpanel and scripts to start/stop/restart and edit the config ini files for the games.

How to install an FTP server on Windows 10

Very similar to previous versions, Windows 10 includes the necessary components to run an FTP server. Follow the steps below to install an FTP server on your PC:

  1. Use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Programs and Features.
  2. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link.

  1. windows-features-enable.jpg?itok=0W9KVut

  2. Expand Internet Information Services and check the FTP Server option.
  3. Expand FTP Server and check the FTP Extensibility option.
  4. Check Web Management Tools with the default selections.
  5. Click OK to begin the installation.
