HDD stopped working on SATA, but works on SATA to USB adapter

Mysticode

My HDD stopped working on SATA, but works on SATA to USB adapter. I did notice last week that there were some SMART errors on the drive, but they weren't in any sort of severe range.

Any idea why the drive continues to work on the SATA to USB adapter?

Any suggestions on a good long term storage drive? This current one has lasted me around four years, and for a Seagate storage drive I'm counting as very lucky.

Thanks all

Does it work if you plug it into a different SATA power connector or SATA data connector?  May be a cable or PSU issue...but from your post I don't know if you're talking about a notebook or desktop drive.

Desktop.

I'll try switching the sata port.

@PineyCreek I tried another HDD with the same port/power, and it's fine:

Really confused why this "Bad" drive works on usb 3.0 without any issue!

Are you using the same cable or another one?

Same power and data cable.

Here it is showing up in Seatools under USB:

I'm currently backing up a few gigs of files to another drive, so it's obviously operational. If I plug it back into my computer via sata, a few minutes after loading into windows, explorer.exe will stop responding and often my PC will blue screen.
