Nvidia graphics card drivers freezing while using web browser.

Screen goes black for several seconds and then picture returns and I get "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error at bottom right corner and this happens perhaps dozen times every day when I am on the computer.

I am using firefox as web browser (I don't like chrome or IE) and I have only noticed it happening when using it. It has never happened while gaming. It started when I upgraded my nvidia drivers to newest. With nvidia driver 381.65 it doesn't happen, but anything newer and it happens. I have tried disabling all the software and services (except microsoft ones) in msconfig to make sure that any of them is causing it.

CPU: I7-4770k

GPU: Asus Geforce GTX 1080ti strix OC

PSU: Seasonic 860W P-860 XP2

RAM: 16Gb Corsaid 2400Mhz DDR3

MB: Asus maximus VI Formula

OS: Windows 7 ultimate 64bit

I primarily use FF as well and I haven't experienced any issues.  Does using the rolled back driver affect your gaming in anyway?  If not you may just hold out until the next Nvidia release.  Could be a bug.

 

You could try reinstalling FF and try using "restore factory defaults" in the driver.  If that doesn't work try using DDU and reinstalling driver fresh.

The driver that works is a year old and there has been many driver versions since then and now and it happens with all those versions. I have not tested performance with different driver versions but I assume there must have been optimization that makes games run better. Every time I have installed a new version of the nvidia driver I have made a clean install. Those freezes most often happen when I am watching youtube or twitch videos.

Reinstalling firefox didn't change anything.

Disable Hardware Acceleration or enable I don't remember at the moment. If that doesn't help google "firefox nvidia tdr fix" .

That tdr fix probably has nothing to do with the current problem because it is 7 years old, but I managed to find this thread

No real solution there, but it seems that I am not the only one with the problem, so at least it is a relief that most likely at least I don't have a bad graphics card like one of the nvidia support agents suggested.

Sorry that didn't help I was just remembering I had this issue with Win7 + nvidia cards a year ago.

Since the problem is with firefox itself. There is probably not much I can do. Perhaps I should use opera until nvidia driver/firefox compatibility problems has been fixed. I am not sure how much disabling hardware acceleration would slow down sites like youtube where it is generally used if you would compare it to experience you would get with opera where hardware acceleration would not cause such issues.
