(PATCHED) Indian character crashes iOS 11.2.x, MacOS, WatchOS and 10

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

An indian character can crash the current version of iOS, 11.2.5 as well as macOS and iOS 10.x. This also doesn't just affect Messenger. it seems any app with crash to varying degrees if this character is pasted into it. The only permanent fix is upgrading to iOS 11.3 which is in beta still. The only other way to fix it it seems is to restore the phone.

Apple really isn't having a good time with iOS 11.

Quote

Summary:
When iOS, MacOS, watchOS try to render Indian symbol '(Crashes iPhones)' all of it has crashed

Steps to Reproduce:
Try to insert '(Crashes iPhones)' this symbol in any system text renderer like TextField, Label, TextView it always has crashed.

Expected Results:
Don't crash and correct render it

Actual Results:
Crash

UPDOOT: Fix has been sent out to mainstream devices.

How does this even happen? Like, it surely can't be hard to just recognise a character

I think it has to do with how the whole OS is coded. I've never heard of any android phones crashing because of a character but it's a common story for iOS.

Now here is the question... By including the offending character in this post, will that cause people trying to view this on iOS to crash?  Also, other sources are reporting as of 4:30 PM US Eastern Time that they will be rolling out a fix for iOS, MacOS and WatchOS in the near future (probably before 11.3 is formally released).

I thought about that after I posted this. Kinda want to visit the site on my iPhone. I don't think it will because he's able to use iMessage again after sending another text yet the indian character is still there. Trying to copy it does crash the phone again though.

Didn’t get affected by the last bug that messed with iPhones in text form, won’t get hit by this one either.

This is probably going to be patched as a stand alone OTA update (which it probably will be), iOS 11.3 is in Beta 3 I think, so it’s a little ways out.

The benefit of iOS is that whenever a vulnerability is found, it can be patched immediately. This isn’t something that can be said about certain, ehh- “other mobile operating systems”

Also there is apparent a work around for any device with 3D Touch and another for those without 3D Touch:
