It's not just gamers that can't get Graphics cards, it's scientists as well.

This is a problem as these cards should not be costing this much, as it is affecting the people who want and need these cards for normal usage. Don't get me wrong I see why they are doing it and quite simply if I could it is entirely possible I would do it as well, but I can't and I am not, and it is making building a PC at the moment very hard, especially when you add in memory. That being said I would of thought that the cards that they would be wanting to buy is the titans and the quadro cards but obviously not.

 

 

 

Also what I like is the BBC has not mentioned this one bit the GPU price rise, right up until it affects science, cause yea it's very good at avoiding important techy stuff to do with computers.

Nice topic, but you should tell them that they should start buying grahpics card at nivida's site where the gpu prices are the same as pretty much last year. Even thou the 2 card limit I'm pretty sure everyone can buy gpus together with various accounts if that works. Hope we discover aliens soon

a few issues with that, A) from the sounds of it they need like 32-64 cards, B) nVidea has that limit as they are having the same problem C) they only have reference designs which don't always have the best cooling (this is a minor)

 

That being said I am surprised they don't have/can't get a direct connect with nVidea for these sales

Is this a joke? Who needs GPUs to listen for extra terrestrial broadcasts, and better yet, what is their scientific evidence that such broadcasts have the potential to happen? What are the chances of it happening?

You can only see so much on the visible spectrum. Planets, stars, nebulas, etc. all emit different forms and amounts of radiation on the radio spectum and you can learn a lot by studying this radiation, far more than you could ever hope to learn with an optical telescope. The scientists couldn't care less about looking for alien broadcasts.

That's a stupid mentality. Not everyone is able to work on folding fucking proteins. People saying space programs serve no purpose forget that GPS and a lot of things that impact your life exist because of physicists.

AMD and Nvidia can easily produce more GPUs but they are scared the prices might drop and they would loose some money. Also Pascal is now end of life

They are afraid of ramping up production on inflated demand that might deflate. I wouldn't ramp up production too if I was them. The crypto currency market is very volatile and could crash for all they know.

I am being slightly sarcastic, I do believe in space research. Though in my own personal opinions, I would prioritize biological research that aids in life span. I am well aware of how important all fields of science are (though listening for aliens is a goofier one)

But they could still ramp it up a bit. The demand has faded but they could have easily flooded the market a month ago and sitll made money. Still though people would buy GPUs

Yes they could but it wouldn't make sense tbh. Nvidia is likely ramping down production for then new gpu release while amd doesn't manufacture their own chips so they might not have had enough control to ramp up production.

Things like Seti@home(example) dont just look for alien life, they also look for black holes, pulsars, etc.
