SSD Slowly Filling Up After Every Boot

JustAStrangeGeek
Go to solution Solved by vanished,

I would not bother running the tool unless you notice the 1 GB drop in disk space that you reported experiencing in the OP.  After all there's no need to see details if you know there's no change.

Hey Guys,

For the past 3 Boots of my PC, I've noticed that every time I boot, an extra gigabyte gets added onto my SSD. Three boots ago the SSD was filled with 89 gigabytes and currently, its 91.9 gigabytes.

This is a major issue, Windows SHOULD NOT do this every time it boots, the only time the SSD should fill up is when you actually store data on the thing.

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K

CPU Cooler: be quiet Silent Loop 280mm AIO

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-z170x-Gaming 6 (rev 1.0)

BIOS: F22

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz (2x8/16GB)

Storage: Samsung SSD 960 Pro 512GB (Boot) and Seagate 2TB SSHD

OS: Windows 10 Home x64

First step to solving this would be to find what is being written and where, then hopefully the answer to that will hint at the cause/source.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Right now, im manually installing KB4074588 (security patch). this update just came out. if it helps, I can't install any cumulative updates using windows update, it just gives me error code: 0x800f081f.

Yeah... was looking for a non third party solution. It might just be a bug in the windows settings as Magician states that the drive is not filling up.

Trust me, Space Sniffer should be part of any tech's toolkit. It's one of the most useful programs I've ever encountered.

It allows you to easily and quickly see large files and/or folders that are taking up space, where they are, and you can start drilling down into folders to see more details.

And it's all graphical, and easy to visually understand.

You do realise that Windows has these exact feature built into the OS?

Go to Storage and left click on a drive. It will display all of the contents of the drive showing program size, the option to uninstall a program and the option to modify a program.

Uhm... No. I don't think you understand exactly what this program does.

Not to say Storage Settings isn't useful. It certainly is.

But this:

Spoiler

5a853383d8df4_storagesettings.thumb.png.6719773f6e8b6cdb9caa43e2ce64f936.png

Is not comparable with this:

Spoiler

5a8533825dfc5_spacesniffer.thumb.png.ab130e3c2955f5e9fa85b4ba7ef89aa1.png

Storage Settings can show me some of this information, definitely.

But I can double click on any single folder you visually see there, and it'll blow that folder up, showing more detail.

I can, at the click of a button, go into more detail or less detail. I can do this continually, searching every part of the drive.

This will show all hidden system files, etc, and aren't always visible browsing File Explorer (unless you enable multiple settings), and it's much easier to see the larger picture, since File Explorer is limited to one directory at a time.

Certainly, Storage Settings is a vast improvement over, for example, the information that Windows 7 could give you. But we're talking about different leagues here - and, to some degree - different uses and purposes.

Edit: If you are a tech/computer enthusiast - especially if you do computer troubleshooting, and/or have an interest in working in IT, I seriously suggest you checkout the program. Give it a whirl. Sure, you won't need it all the time, but when you do need it, it's priceless:

There are other third party tools that perform a similar task, but I have yet to encounter one better than this.

I find that offensive since I have been working with PCs since seven years-of-age.

Today when I booted my PC (twice), both Windows, Magician and CrystalDiskMark were reporting the same amount of used data stored on the drive. They were previously not reporting all the same values.

It may just be one of those Windows things that you have to deal with until they patch it. An example would be that glitch that prevented you from interacting with Windows after it booted, the only way to resolve this, was to reboot the PC. That glitch was going to make me punch a hole in my screen if MS didn't patch it. Luckily, since an update that I didn't document nor remember, the problem has stopped occurring with my daily driver.

Yeah, I don't feel comfortable sharing my file directory with the 'People's Rebublic of HTTPS'. I do understand that these exact files are on every Windows 10 PC, but I still don't feel relaxed about it, if you know what I mean. Especially if I miss to censor names/users.

No offense, but I make no assumptions about what kind of user you are. Also, simply being a member of "PC Master Race" does not make one a tech enthusiast by default. I know many people in "PCMR" that would be utterly helpless in an IT role.

Also, being able to do troubleshooting, while great, does not mean you're using the best tools available to you - especially if you've never heard of said tools before. Most of the best tools are third party, so the fact that it's not part of Windows is kind of irrelevant.

Look I apologize if you feel I'm being aggressive or unfair. This isn't an e-peen competition. I'm not trying to 'out "IT" you' or anything. I'm just showing you a kickass application, that is incredibly useful.

A similar tool to Space Sniffer. Both are great, though I find Space Sniffer's UI to be easier to decipher.

Then don't post a screenshot of your file directory? That's cool man. I respect your privacy and your right to want privacy. Use one of the tools yourself and don't upload the results, then. It'll still be useful to see in more detail what exactly is using up space.

This is getting ridiculous.  As I said, literally the first step to solving this is finding out what is taking up the space.  You've been recommended two different excellent tools for the job and refused to use them for some inexplicable reason.  You can either use them and actually move on with the troubleshooting, or just keep taking blind guesses at to the problem.  Up to you.

Not to mention his current plan is 'I hope Microsoft fixes it some day'.  So... This should play out well in the near future.

I was only joking, if anyone could possibly be offended by that, their idiots.

I also know a few people that are PC gamers and not so tech oriented.

If this is a bug in Windows, wouldn't you like to see them fixed? It is always greatly appreciated when companies fix bugs only certain users are having. After all, would you not prefer Microsoft's 1st party solution of fixing a potential bug over 3rd party tools?

'Like to see' and 'realistically expect to see' are two rather different things.
