Dear Toyota, Why Did You Make This Car a Camry?

Max_Settings

Should have been RWD/manual to replace the former range of XR6T and SS's. Perhaps also adding something like a turbo....

I don't think they're going full sportscar with it. Just making it less boring.

They could've, but if only the few petro heads actually buy one, then it's not worth the investment in developing such a model.

That's the point some of us were trying to make. The Camry has absolutely ZERO problem selling TONS of cars, even when it was a boring polished turd.

But 99% of the ones that sell are the boring ones. It's going to be hard to get people to spend 36K on a Camry. The XSE V6 should of been it's own car and all the other lower models should of still been the Camry.

I seen one of those driving around.  Caught my eye for sure.  I dig the new look.

I am actually glad the lower end vehicles are starting to get a style to them again.  Because, the past several years been a bore on the looks factor for most vehicles

Main reason I nabbed myself a Tacoma, I love the new look.  Now, if Ford will stop making the F series look like it got smacked by a wall.

Also, 4 cyls can be super fun.  :D Hehe, straight blocks are my major love affair (especially on trucks).

Um, how is not 355,204 sold in 2017 in the US not a ton?

It is only out sold by the trucks that tend to hold the top spots in the US market.

Now global maybe a different matter, but over 300,000 is not a small number.  Well a bit small compare to the stupid amount of F-series Ford moves each year just in the States.

But this is the 2018 Camry, that number is the 2017. And 90% of that is the cheaper models. Even on the 2018 the cheaper models have completely different styling.

When I first saw a picture of this Toyota car, I thought to myself, "Oh my God that has to be one of the best looking cars Toyota has ever come out with." Then I saw it was a Camry.... Toyota, why did you waste this incredible design on a Camry? The Camry, America's best selling car, is regarded as the most boring average car there is. Now Toyota makes an spectacular looking car with a ton of stuff for a fair price, and it's a Camry. Me as a car person would never drive a Camry just because of the image that the Camry has as the least car person car there is. But I really want to buy one of these. Let me explain. The Camry XSE V6 is an awesome looking dare I say sports sedan. I particularly like it in white with the black roof, black spoiler, and red interior. This model has a 301 HP 3.5L V6 and does 0-60 MPH in around 5.5s. That is definitely getting close to the lower end of sports sedans. This car fully loaded at about $36,000 has a ton of stuff. Adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic emergency breaking, blind spot monitoring, a backup camera, a 360 degree surround view camera, navigation, wireless phone charging, a good JBL audio system, and more cool tech. And just look at the aggressive sporty styling! The Camry has always been the most boring soccer mom car there is, but now this model has aggressive sporty looks that I dare say rival the looks of Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes. It is a little on the over the top side, not necessarily elegant, but I do like it. Which brings me to my point. Why did Toyota make this a Camry? The none XSE Camry models are still quite boring and plain looking with completely different styling, but the XSE is incredible looking. I honestly think Toyota should have saved this design and made it an entry model Lexus. Or why did Toyota not just make it something else? Toyota has had enough cool cars in their history where the entire brand isn't totally uncool to car people, the Supra, Celica, MR2, and 86. If Toyota would of made this car it's own model and called it something other than Camry, Corolla, or Avalon, I would buy one. And I'm not alone in that. I have spoken to a lot of my other car people friends and most agree with me, if it wasn't a Camry, they would buy one. Toyota wouldn't face the problem that Kia is having trying to sell their new $50,000 sports sedan, the Stinger GT, because Toyota has once again had some cool cars, unlike Kia who has never made a single cool car in it's history. Car people really care about their image and what they drive, so no car person would ever drive it just because it's a Camry. If it were not a Camry, I would march right now to my Toyota dealer today and but one. What do you think about this Camry? Like it, hate it? And do you think I'm being crazy? xD

My friend, please, add some proper grammar to your post.

It's currently a 530 word wall of text. At least break it up into some paragraphs.

I will now attempt to read said wall of text.

Because Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, Holden (Chevrolet for the US & Vauxhall for the UK) all need to compete with the likes of BMW, Mercedes, Alfa etc for looks & style, but need to be affordable. So you apply this styling to their most popular lines & try & make it somewhat affordable.

Okay so I finally skimmed your text. Basically, you're upset because a well designed car happens to have the Camry badge?

Haha alright.

I drove a 2016 XLE Camry fully loaded as a rental when my car was in for repair, and it was kickass. I would for sure buy this Camry.

Only people who think Camry is bad (or boring) are people who take being a "car person" way too far.

Heh... Camry is one of the highest selling cars in history. They might not sell as many of these as compared to, say, the base model, but I have no doubt they'll still sell tons of this model too.

You know, you can't look at the outside of a car while you're driving it except for the hood.  Maybe obsessing about looks is misguided?

Obsessing, yes. But it would be disingenuous to say that looks don't matter at all with a car.

Unfortunately some people take looks far too seriously though.

I agree, obsession is the problem, and not just for looks.  For instance: the OP's obsession with the label "Camry". (Badges can be removed.)  But I think this horse has been beaten enough.

I still think Toyota needs to bring a RWD sedan to the states, instead of having an all FWD sedan lineup. And make it cheap too, so it's fit for the masses, and the gearheads who wanna beat on it.

The Camry the OP linked isn't exactly "lower-end". Sure it's not a $100K performance saloon, but it's solidly fully loaded mid-range full size sedan.
