Dear Toyota, Why Did You Make This Car a Camry?

Max_Settings

When I first saw a picture of this Toyota car, I thought to myself, "Oh my God that has to be one of the best looking cars Toyota has ever come out with." Then I saw it was a Camry.... Toyota, why did you waste this incredible design on a Camry? The Camry, America's best selling car, is regarded as the most boring average car there is. Now Toyota makes an spectacular looking car with a ton of stuff for a fair price, and it's a Camry. Me as a car person would never drive a Camry just because of the image that the Camry has as the least car person car there is. But I really want to buy one of these. Let me explain. The Camry XSE V6 is an awesome looking dare I say sports sedan. I particularly like it in white with the black roof, black spoiler, and red interior. This model has a 301 HP 3.5L V6 and does 0-60 MPH in around 5.5s. That is definitely getting close to the lower end of sports sedans. This car fully loaded at about $36,000 has a ton of stuff. Adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, automatic emergency breaking, blind spot monitoring, a backup camera, a 360 degree surround view camera, navigation, wireless phone charging, a good JBL audio system, and more cool tech. And just look at the aggressive sporty styling! The Camry has always been the most boring soccer mom car there is, but now this model has aggressive sporty looks that I dare say rival the looks of Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes. It is a little on the over the top side, not necessarily elegant, but I do like it. Which brings me to my point. Why did Toyota make this a Camry? The none XSE Camry models are still quite boring and plain looking with completely different styling, but the XSE is incredible looking. I honestly think Toyota should have saved this design and made it an entry model Lexus. Or why did Toyota not just make it something else? Toyota has had enough cool cars in their history where the entire brand isn't totally uncool to car people, the Supra, Celica, MR2, and 86. If Toyota would of made this car it's own model and called it something other than Camry, Corolla, or Avalon, I would buy one. And I'm not alone in that. I have spoken to a lot of my other car people friends and most agree with me, if it wasn't a Camry, they would buy one. Toyota wouldn't face the problem that Kia is having trying to sell their new $50,000 sports sedan, the Stinger GT, because Toyota has once again had some cool cars, unlike Kia who has never made a single cool car in it's history. Car people really care about their image and what they drive, so no car person would ever drive it just because it's a Camry. If it were not a Camry, I would march right now to my Toyota dealer today and buy one. What do you think about this Camry? Like it, hate it? And do you think I'm being crazy? xD

I dunno if the models worldwide are the same name, isn't this the same trick Honda did with the Civic some years ago? Was kinda odd seeing the near-deceased driving around in cars that their grandchildren wouldn't mind.

Honestly, I didn't know that it had a bad reputation outside of ALL Toyotas having that accelerator issue causing the largest recall in automotive history.

The bad reputation doesn't come from substantive reasons though. It's reliable, good looking and it's even fun to drive for a FWD sedan. Personally, I wouldn't get so hung up on a namesake. Get it, make it your own and show people that any car can be cool (as cheesy as that sounds.)

Why do you people drive on the wrong side of the car? I get why you did back in the olden days. In case you didn’t know this, the reason Europeans drive on the right side of the road dates back to the days of horses. Since most people are right handed riding on the right hand side of the road allowed you to slash swords with someone you were fighting who was riding in the opposite direction. But now that doesn’t apply any more.

Clearly also not true considering the sales :P

It's a family car. What do you expect?
I also don't see any problem with it being called a Camry. If you're buying a vehicle based on name and not the car itself, you're an idiot.

There's several levels of car people.

There are people that appreciate cars.

There are people that are car enthusiasts that like to drive performance cars.

Then there are people, like myself, that have built performance engines and raced (days that are sadly behind me...).

Even I can get behind Toyota making a nice looking car that appears fun to drive. I don't hate.

Camry or not, I'd buy this in a heartbeat if I had the money to. The way I see it, Toyota was trying to appeal to a different demographic with their best selling car and by the looks of it, it seems to be working.
