Nvidia Rumour: GTX 2080 & 2070 using Ampere (GA104) and will launch in April, GP102 is EOL

Master Disaster

I might seriously consider getting one of these. Always wanted amd because I have a freesync monitor but tbh they've been pretty poop and one of these guys probably can push above 2560x1080 75 hz.

Maybe it's time to get a 1440p 165 hz or 1440p ultrawide 100 hz g sync panel.

Ampere is probably similar to Volta but with the Tensor cores removed. Would let them make the die smaller.

The 2080 Ti and 2080 might ship with GDDR6 in place of GDDR5X that was on the 1080 Ti and 1080.

This little graph shows theoretical perf: https://www.anandtech.com/show/12338/samsung-starts-mass-production-of-gddr6-memory

image.png.45d3141445f253df06d6e473f3af7a66.png  Assuming of course nvidia are going to allow it to operate at 18Gb/s. They might aim for lower, maybe around 16Gb/s then increase later.

Of course I'm just speculating.

You think Nvidia still won't pair HBM 2 with GA102 for the consumer market?

LSD would make me jelly. You gonna RGB your intercooler too? haha just kidding. I know you are like the case master but if I decided to just build a new system I might end up going with a nicer glass case with some water cooling as well but idk... might just get a new GPU for now.

(Now that I think of it, my ST3 has "rgb" in it lol...)

Sometimes I think about adding lights to the footwells, but it's not worth it since I'm usually the only person in my car.

Dont get me started on what case I want. At this point if I had to pick right now it would probably be the Define R6, only because the H700i is too expensive and I'd be wasting the $50 extra on a feature I'd literally throw away. This is all assuming of curse course* GPU prices are decent and Ram is somewhat affordable.

The 2016 ST isnt showing it's age nearly as much as my 3+ year old gaming rig is, considering I like playing at 144hz when I can and right now in new games Im getting about 60 on medium. And it's definitely for the aesthetic. In my friends circle three years ago I had the best PC hands down, now everyone has built their own PC, the most recent was an R7 1800x/GTX1060 gaming/workstation PC... I cannot allow myself to be bested! :D

The GA104. Gamers don't even get their second biggest chip in the x80 card, and they can save the GA102 for the x80ti. That's how far ahead of AMD they are that they can sell mid range chips at high end prices.

EDIT: ALL GPUs make sure they can't be used for mining!

On the contrary: please, double the mining performance of Pascal, and adjust its price (to AIB partners) appropriately.

After all, as Nvidia said, we don't need more than Pascal for gaming. But we could use lower Pascal prices.

I'd almost go camping in front of a store to get a better GPU. Not that the GTX1060 6GB is bad, but I've wanted a 1070 for months and no way am I paying €450+ for an ex-miner card.

You think Nvidia still won't pair HBM 2 with GA102 for the consumer market?

I imagine they'll skip HBM 2. Given that it's more expensive to implement and even with Titan V and all sorts of other cards using it that have a "limited" market the yield probably aren't as great as what GDDR6 will have.

It will probably have something to do with the memory controller as well. The consumer cards are probably going to stay on the GDDR path for the time being. Even though GDDR5X and GDDR6 aren't pin compatible, the change should easy enough.

I don't think people are pushing the resolutions and details in games to warrant HBM 2 just yet. The GTX 1080/1080 Ti/ Titan Xp can do a rather good job at 4K. GDDR6 might finally let us do 4k 144Hz. Anything beyond would require the additional bandwidth that HBM 2 gives I imagine. I could see 5K - 8K gaming or multi-monitor 4K setups needing HBM 2. There's people like that out there.

In short I'd be surprised that nvidia chooses HBM 2 for the consumers this time around. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I find it interesting they'd stop making GP102s before they have a GA102 to replace it with.

Wouldn't that mean that 1080ti stock might dry up while they only have a 2080 on the shelves to replace it with?

I'd assume the professional card, not the gaming side, isn't as popular as they thought. The Titan V replaces a bunch of its utility. The X80 Ti parts aren't big sellers, even if they're in every benchmark. With Volta, the designs are splitting even further for Nvidia, as their professional cards are getting very different core structures going forward. The "2080" should be faster anyway.
