Adequate air cooling for i7 7700k OC

babadoctor

What is a good air cooling solution for overclocking an i7 7700k?

On the high end of the spectrum I would be willing to buy this

I don't really know anything about cpu cooling at all, and which is best.

What would be the difference between using this and the noctua one I listed? noctua seems really expensive, but i don't know what the difference could be between the two, besides its size.

The fin size and dissipation. The hyper 212 was good for overclocking like the 4590/4790k and the likes, but the newer generation chips dissipate much more heat that needs a place to go so the NH d15 would be a good choice imho. Heck, you may want to go with an AIO or a heatsink that is much larger to allow more heat dissipation.

Hyper 212 evo is a decent budget heatsink, but if you want to get to some serious overclocking get a dual tower cryorig/noctua is your best bet, as long as you dont want a water cooler.

Yeah, I don't want to do any water cooling because of the annoying amount of setup it requires for little gain. (and possible coil whine)

what is an AIO?

could you give an example of said much larger heatsink

AIO is an all in one water cooler. So you dont need to prep it yourself. It is just a pump/block preped with a rad in a closed loop.

@babadoctor an AIO is an all in one liquid cooler. I use the h100i v2 and it allows me to overclock my 7700k to 5.2Ghz without any issues in terms of heating. The only downside is if you're not careful, you can damage the components.

If air cooling is your thing, you could try the Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3.I can't really think of much else since I'm more into AIO's

Nope. Cheaper than custom water cooling. I have an H80i v2, it cost me some 90 euro.

Are you planning to oc? The NH-D15 will allow much more thermal headroom.

I'd suggest going with a cheaper alternative like the Kotetsu: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/7998TW/scythe-cpu-cooler-scktt1000

It performs better than the 212 LED and doesn't cost much more. https://elchapuzasinformatico.com/2013/12/review-scythe-kotetsu/5/
