Why doesn't Microsoft release Office or Onedrive for Linux?

i'm wondering why Microsoft still hasn't released Microsoft office or onedrive for linux.

some would say, because they have Windows to focus on. but i don't believe that.

first of all, Office has been available on Mac for decades.

second, Microsoft have done a lot of development with linux. from the linux subsystem on Windows 10 to Powershell for Linux.

and i don't understand why they woudn't really. especially Onedrive.

now, i don't use Onedrive. i use Dropbox, because it's cross platform.

i need to use both Windows and Linux for my education, and if Onedrive would work on Linux i'd use that. but since it isn't, it's not an option.

and Office i don't get either. because Microsoft would still earn money from it. just as they do from Mac users.

my speculation is that Microsoft wants people to keep paying for Windows to run in virtual machines, because a lot of people need Office. and Onedrive..

but that's just my speculation. i'd love to hear your opinions on this!

because if you are using linux.. you are smart

and smart people see..

libreoffice, which is free, and works on mac/windows/linux, and can do word documents/read docx/doc files.. etc

why should I be paying for a service/software that literally has a alternative that is free and works pretty good

don't forget... most of the loud linux people are screaming that they use arch and fuck microsoft!

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

If they ported office to linux, a large amount of the windows user base would no longer have a reason to use windows other than personal preference. Since linux distros are mostly free of charge they're afraid it would significantly cut into their license sales to students and low range oems. This isn't really a secret even though they've never explicitly said it. Office for mac doesn't interfere with this because to get macOS you need to buy an expensive mac and you probably wouldn't have bought a windows license anyway.

While for many uses libreoffice is more than enough, it's not quite equivalent to ms office. It's simply less functional and clunkier and it's not the industry standard, which does matter in some situations. It's not an adequate drop-in replacement for every office.

Tried LibreOffice on a dual-core and couldn't see more than 30CPM at a time. The dual-core N2840 would struggle to type out pages while Word simply worked much better on the same hardware.

I have to use it on my core duo laptop. It doesn't even want to run windows 7 properly and if it does it's a 15fps Shit show WITH a SSD.

It .. works. its quite shit but it works.

Only if you had already bought an older windows license. OEMs (and, by extension, any customer or business buying new machines) also didn't get it for free. That's where they make money, they don't care about individual customers upgrading their custom desktop (especially since if the upgrade hadn't been free most people would have just kept whatever they had at the time - infact, they did anyway).

You are talking about home users. The same users Microsoft never cared if they used pirate versions.

Enterprise users, on the other hand, pay for every license, pay for support services...

Libreoffice (and OpenOffice before it) are steaming garbage piles that are good only for the most basic of tasks. Microsoft Office is one of the few remaining pieces of software with no true, viable competitor.

The reasons that Office aren’t on Linux are many. These would be the two most important.

1. It would cost a lot of time and effort. Office is not a simple piece of software and is pretty reliant on Windows features - even the Mac version (while better then it was) is not as functional. Porting all that code - some of which dates back to 80s - to Linux would be a gargantuan task, that wouldn’t be worth it because:

2. The desktop Linux market is too small. Few professionals or companies use Linux for their workstations. Most Linux users want free, open source software. No one would buy Office for Linux. The argument could be made that if Office was available on Linux that Linux adoption would increase, but that’s hardly in Microsoft’s best interest, is it?

WPS Office is so identical ot MS Office that I'm surprised it is legal. It's not entirely free nor open source, though, but more like an Ad-based Office.

It is compatible with all OSes, I believe

In fact, in the early days of windows MS themselves would spread pirated copies to increase their marketshare. It's all about maintaining the monopoly, they don't care about a few pirated copies as long as they can keep asking whatever they want to enterprise customers.

You have the web site version of both.

Microsoft isn't making a Linux version probably because they see 0 value in it (too small market share for it). Although, Skype for Linux is a thing and is in development.

Aside the fact the amount of Linux users is insignificant facing Windows making that market so limited it probably wouldn't be worth allocating resources towards doing it.

At least it reverts, and you have a working system. And has the ability to restore back in a time a system without affecting personal files. So you have many layers to undo screws up either done by the OS or the user. Wish Linux distros would work on that.

Yes because a failed windows update every once 10.000 successfuls ones is something to go crazy over, this technology is never perfect regardless how much you invest on it, to every "bad" in Windows you'll get 5~ bad in Linux either ways making an actual ratio comparison.
