Alternatives to the Ikea Linnmon Corner Desk?

jtmoseley

Alright so I already have a pc, but my desk right now is pretty bad. I cannot see into the side window of my PC, and I cannot have more than 2 monitors. I was looking at Ikea, and saw a cheap desk series, the Ikea Linnmon. They had a corner desk and a straight desk, and that would work well with my setup. I also liked the color white, as well as the lack of shelving. I am more of a minimalist as far as design goes, and shelving clutters a desk in my opinion. The issue is that Ikea is the only desk maker that I have found that can supply those barebone desks. I have checked Home depot, walmart, amazon... All of them just have the Ikea desks. From Ikea.

Which brings me to my problem: I live in Glasgow, Kentucky, and there are no ikea's in my state. Just Walmarts, Home Depots, Lowes, Targets, Sams club... But no stores that have desks like ikea does. So how do I go about getting a desk like that? Do I just bite the bullet on the shipping costs, and pay 50 dollars extra for 75 dollars of stuff? Or do I build my own desk with those dimensions (Which might end up being more than the 150 dollars of ikea)? Are there any alternatives? I want a corner desk and a straight desk so I have room, and no keyboard tray.

Problem solved. Build a desk yourself! Lumber, nails, duct tape, zipties, some paint, a sealant, some screws, a polish, and you should be good to go.

This should be incredibly cheap to make, and you'll have a more solid desk.

You need:

  • 4 sheets of plywood
  • 8 legs
  • 8 2x4's
  • Trim
  • Glue
  • Nails/screws
  • Paint

Home Depot should be able to cut the materials for you. If you want to scale it up, you can get a tempered glass top.

Hahaha, it shouldn't take an engineer. They just over think things.

No idea, I don't live in the US so I don't know what materials costs are like there. I hear Home Depot has prices on their website though ;)

Well the whole amazon thing is that they are all super overpriced, and I liked the curve instead of the L, so that I can have room for a keyboard and mouse and 3 monitors on it without having some lopsided corners

Build yourself: IKEA paper stuffed desks aren't very good. I bought one for $15 + legs and it feels like it will split when my monitor is on it.

Yeah, people use zipties all the time. Especially handy for cable managing one's glorious PC build.

I should do that at some point. Although that duct tape life...

I actually have to hold the front panel on one of my cases on with tape, but I used transparent packing tape so it's harder to spot.

Bahaha that's crazy!! I had the same case years ago! I gave it to my dad and he's since cut holes in the top and sides to mount additional cooling for his 560Ti SLI set up.
