SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket somehow survived a landing in the Atlantic Ocean

ItsMitch

Elon Musk is a pretty mad man as his company, SpaceX, has successfully landed (the worlds first??) a Falcon 9 rocket booster in the ocean.  Source today is RT

Quote

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket booster defied the odds and survived a high-powered water landing on Wednesday – surprising even company founder Elon Musk.

The rocket launched a GovSat-1 communications satellite for Luxembourg and satellite operator SES from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida on Wednesday. SpaceX had decided not to land the Falcon 9’s first stage booster on one of its drone ships in the sea, announcing instead that it would not attempt to recover the device after landing.

Elon Musk took to twitter and posted a picture of the rocket splashed down on the water, although we don't know if the rocket will be reused now. He replied to a Twitter user saying the rocket did 3 controlled burns to come back safely so it doesn't damage Of Course I Still Love You drone ship and also some rocket porn from SpaceX's twitter of the launch

Who knows what Elon Musk will do next, maybe do more launches like this in the future and try and land them on the water safely? Who knows.

Some are. Jeff Bezos (Amazon) and Sir Richard Branson (Virgin Airlines), among others, are also in the race for space. SpaceX is just WAY ahead of the pack.

This is great news that the hull integrity of the rocket is strong enough to withstand emergency landings and still be recoverable. Bodes well for future flights. Not sure if this is what they were going for, but a great finding nonetheless.

Yeah, but we're still waiting to see if the rocket will be reused for future missions or if they'll just use it for spare parts because from what's been reported, it took a lot of damage on the landing

You know you're doing good when you're landing too many rockets so you purposefully crash-land rockets in the ocean because you can't recover and store them. And then of course it's extra showing off when said rocket survives the impact on the ocean surface ¯\__/¯

True, I got ahead of myself there; we don't know their definition of "survived" is and if it is reusable. Sea water and engines don't really agree with each other.

That's true, but it's SpaceX so who knows what pixie dust they put in their rockets.

Thread title is misleading; the rocket crashed into the water it didnt land on it. once they get that thing back to land people will see that thing is far from reusable.

they might be able to reuse a few parts but those will he far and few between.

No, if it crashed on the water then it would of ended up completely destroyed, it landed successfully since it didn't break apart as they thought it did.

No.  Crashes don't mean completely destroyed, though your video helps clarify my point.  Cars are in fender benders everyday but that doesn't mean completely destroyed, but they are still considered a crash.

Survival is a subjective word. Think about veterans whom have lost a limb in battle. Sure they survived but are they the same? Are they reusable? No.

Elon himself said it survived but never said it landed. No doubt about it, the thread title is misleading. The thing DID NOT land. it crashed in a controlled fashion. Fact is, you can't land on water but you can crash into it.

Look closely at this picture, notice how far away they took the picture?  They are hiding the damage by not releasing a close up. The fin has a hole in it, the nose Is missing, and the cylinder looks fatigued from burning up during reentry.

It's more a crash landing than a crash, it was an intentional choice not to land it on a platform and to do the sea landing. There wasn't an expectation for it to stay intact but it was still a controlled decent

They are moving on from the current design of their boosters, so they want to get as much data as they can now and probably wont reuse the currently already used rockets more than once because it costs them way to much to refurb and store them, they have like 19 used rockets just waiting to be used. The new design woould be able to be refurbed cheaper, more and faster. SpaceX wanted to test a 3 engine deacceleration burn instead of their 1 engine burn. They had never tried this, so they wouldnt want to risk damaging their droneships, so they just did it over water. If it crashed they could see where they should improve, but the fact it was still intact is insane, because that means that it worked flawlessly

This booster was testing a much higher energy landing burn with 3 engines instead of the usual 1. They did it into water so in the very likely event the rocket messed up the drone ship wouldn’t be harmed. This booster had already flown once amd was a block 3 so it was never going to be flown again. Now that salt water has gotten everywhere there is even less reason to reuse it. The whole point was to get more data on this kind of landing as it’s more fuel efficient but also more challenging due to how abrupt the deceleration is.

It's a block 3 booster, it was never meant to be reused over and over. Plus they already have lots of used block 3's sitting around.

They did this specifically because they did not want to reuse it again. The soft landing was just done so they could have 1 more test run of their maneuvers (more data never hurts), and to get rid of all the rocket fuel that would otherwise pollute the environment. This way, it will become a nice artificial reef.

Very well, new headline.

"Rocket comes into stable contact with water's surface than immediately falls over and floats when engines cut out."

BREAKING: rocket falls over after hitting a solid object with no landing legs
