CPU Cooler Performance Tier List

1 hour ago, WallacEngineering said:

Ive got a Cryorig R1 Universal with upgraded Phanteks PH-F140 HP II fans, I can confidently state that with proper airflow it deserves a bump to tier 1

Stress Testing with my Ryzen 5 1600X OC - 3.975GHz @1.392V for two hours and it never even hit 70C. See my build log in my signature for details

What were your temps with the stock fans before replacing them? Did you have the original PH-F140 fans before?

The coolers listed are with their stock configuration and are tiered in respect to that. As far as that's concerned, the R1 Ultimate more consistently trades blows with the coolers listed in Tier 2 than outperforming them.

Ya stock it was very NEARLY as good, but this is probably due to my ridiculous 540mm worth of intake fans, so yea I can see your point lol. Stock fans aren't PH series, they are Cryorig's own design. I always thought it was slightly unfair to judge the R1 based on the stock fans though, as Cryorig uses fairly crappy low RPM fans that are pretty terrible with static pressure as well, but testing all coolers in their stock configuration is fair in another way :)

I might be misremembering but I think you mentioned having PH-F140 fans before without the II so I thought that you might have swapped the fans out twice.

It could be anything really. Weird mounting on the asetek mounts, some nuance in the IHS that favors noctua's mounting mechanism, perhaps their esecially designed plate that covers the whole IHS.

I'd wait for someone else to repeat the experiment (this is an experiment and doesn't actually answer the question until it's confirmed in other benches).

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Was that with TR4/SP3? The dies are spread around more, so the size of the coldplate on the cooler matters a lot. The standard Asetek ones aren't as big as the custom Noctua or Enermax ones.

Yeah, the coolers in the video are TR4 variants which perform much better than the normal lineup at least when it comes to TR4. https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/3029-quick-ab-test-impact-tr4-coldplate-size-with-noctua

I'd like to add them to the tier list when there's more data but it might be difficult to get a clear idea of where it stands without tests comparing the TR4 coolers on non-TR4 sockets and against the normal lineup.

Perhaps you can add a note that TR4 users should look for TR4 specific coolers as the performance difference can be up to 2 tiers

Speaking about limited data - Eisbaer 120 is in the list but I only found this review: https://www.hardwareasylum.com/reviews/cooling/alphacool_eisbaer-120/page4.aspx

Do you recall any other sources? Because that seems like a very interesting product (copper radiator and would theoretically get rid of as much heat with just one relatively low throughput fan where others in the same tier usually require 2 or higher throughput ones) but I'm not all that confident because of the lack of data.

Added note. I'm not sure if I should add separate TR4 entries into the list. Just doing more research atm.

Yeah, I couldn't find an abundance of data on it but what I did see between tests and forum threads was consistent enough to add it to the list.

Nah, there's not much of a difference between the best and average pastes.

True dat. Take a cheaper, popular paste like Arctic's MX-4 and a more expensive, "exotic" paste like Thermal Grizzly's Kyronaut. While Kyronaut will do better, the MX-4 will only run 2-3°C hotter in 99% of all applications, weather liquid or air cooled.

Beisides, just Google "Toms Hardware Thermal Paste". Very extensive review already available.

After using Cryorig C1 and H5 in the same system I can say the C1 is not even close. It's more comparable to a 212. The H5 keeps my CPU at 65C during a stress test. The C1 was at 80C.

What are the system specs? If the fan on the heatsink isn't facing the same direction as the rest of the airflow in the system, it will perform worse than it otherwise could.

Hello guys, this is my first post here.
Not sure if this is the right place to ask but, I want to upgrade my corsair H60 for a 240mm AIO (I lacked case space when I bought it).
My cpu is the i7 7700k and I want to be able to overclock it.
Since I live in Brazil, most of the other coolers are not accessible or too expensive to me.

Taking into account my current budget I could get any of those:

Tier 2: Deepcool Maelstrom 240 / T**
Tier 3:
Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240**

Tier 4: Cryorig H5 Ultimate
Any idea/suggestions on which one of those is the best I could get? Is there a clear difference between those tiers?

Edit: There's also some unlisted coolers with the same price range I could consider like:
PCYES SANGUE FRIO 240MM PWC240H40PTSL
GAMEMAX ICEBERG 240MM
MYMAX ALGOR 240MM

The C1 is a downdraft cooler and the h5 is a tower cooler. And they were both on an overclocked R7 1700, 3.9 at 1.35v.

That's the point. I'm guessing the fans in your system is facing the same direction as the H5 as opposed to the C1. The direction of airflow varies between different systems.

They're the same heatsink. The eSports ONE just has one fan included as opposed to the two on the original eSports Edition. The difference in performance isn't that big and you'd have identical performance by adding a second fan to the heatsink.

    Corsair H45 / 80**

Hi guys,Warm greetings! Newbie here.

I want to ask "Is Corsair H45 really that great that is outperforms so many 240mm radiator liquid coolers priced so much higher?"

If so why isn't it more popular? What are the caveats one must be aware of when choosing this?

I mean this is a Tier 3 cooler and has a 5 year warranty from corsair, what am I missing here?

Yes, it performs that well at least from the benchmarks I've looked at. Keep in mind that these are with fans at 100% rpm or 2300rpm for the H45. The caveat is that it's noisy or performs worse with fans at lower rpm. It can also perform worse due to placement in the case. Corsair recommends it as intake at the rear of the case but that often means more dust accumulation since most cases don't include rear fan filters as they're generally meant to be used as exhaust.

It's less popular since it's less well known than other 120mm AIO's (ex: H60 / H80) and most people lump all 120mm AIO's in the 'not worth getting' bin. It makes sense since it's usually around the same price as high end air coolers that are quieter and don't need an unfiltered intake for near optimal performance.
