CPU Cooler Performance Tier List

Can you add more China cooling products like ID-Cooling in the list? (since they are popular in SEA region)

Also dexxterlab97 has an air cooling list before so you can make it as a reference.

Edit: If possible, do a noise level to performance tier list too. Also you can do some markings on LP coolers

I found this a bit irrelevant since I've seen before that a 130W TDP rated air cooler beats a 150W TDP rated air cooler. It just some sort of marketing IMO since the cooling capability of an air cooler also depends on the heatsink design and fan used.

Awesome! I absolutely love the inclusion of SilentiumPC Grandis in this tier list, FYI: there's a SilentiumPC Grandis 2 at the moment which has one 140mm fan and one 120mm (the original version had two 120mm ones), I had this cooler myself and it was amazing for the price!

P.S. IMO the Dark Rock Pro 3 and Cryorig R1 Ultimate should switch places, the R1 is barely better in terms of thermals (https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/6083/cryorig-r1-ultimate-cpu-cooler-review/index7.html) but it achieves that only because of higher RPM of the fans, meaning it's a lot noisier:
6083_32_cryorig_r1_ultimate_cpu_cooler_r

The Be Quiet! cooler is not only better looking but probably also better made, installation is a pain for some people though (I had no issues with it personally when I was mounting it first time in my father's rig)

EDIT: There's going to be a Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 soon though with improved installation system and probably everything else too (thermals, acoustics) so I suppose it should also be considered for Tier 1 :P More info about it:

Quote
  • Inner SilentWings 135mm PWM fan features: airflow-optimized blades, six-pole fan motor and FDB
  • Decoupled fan mounting
  • Seven advanced high-performance copper heat pipes maximize heat conductance
  • Special wave-contoured cooling fins for silent airflow
  • Small dots on the fin surface form a larger cooling area
  • Fins have improved RAM compatibility (bottom fins feature cut-outs for memory)
  • Special black coating with ceramic particles for perfect heat transfer
  • Brushed aluminum top cover with high-grade diamond cut finish
  • Convenient top mounting (screwdriver included)
  • 250W TDP
  • Support for an additional 120mm fan
  • Projected release: Q2 2018

I'll see where the Grandis 2 fits in the list as well.

The DRP3 gets close in some but is worse than the R1 Ultimate in most benchmarks.

This list only ranks thermal performance and ignores acoustics or ease of installation. Consistency in mounting does reflect in performance across different reviews and benchmarks though.

I'd assume you're completely disregarding cost-to-benefice and only considering "performance" since the Hyper 212X was cheap enough to me, cools my i7 8700 to 65Cº max load temp while being virtually silent, has good looking parts and is classified as "tier 6" when it was probably the most beneficial purchase for my user-case?

See this kind of issue is non-present on the PSU Tier list... I'd give this a second thought.

How are the tiers decided? Is it based purely off performance, or are things like mounting mechanism, noise and overall build quality taken into account? Wondering about things like Noctua's low profile coolers, which will be marked down if it's just performance. Same goes for the bequiet! DRP3, which had a terrible mounting mechanism (until recently, I believe)

It's just performance. Ease of use, aesthetics, and value are very important to making a decision on which cooler to go with but would mean having another tier list altogether so that isn't taken into account. This is mainly a guideline for picking out the better performer when there are many benchmarks and reviews with inconsistent results. Tier 6 isn't a 'bad' tier at all and anything listed at Tier 7 or above is acceptable in certain situations.

Coolers in each tier are mostly interchangeable when it comes to performance. There are a few coolers in each tier than could easily bleed into the tier above or below it since cooling performance is a gradient.

The Gammaxx 400's performance ranges from 212 Evo on the low end to NH-U12S+

It's pretty inconsistent so I dropped it above the 212 Evo.

I believe this ^ should be at the OP just to avoid confusion, on the PSU tier list we have cost friendly PSUs on the Tier 1 and 2, like my Corsair TXM was not the most expensive one of the list by a far mile but is still awesome value for its performance and made it to the Tier 1... this list as is could potentially make noobs uneasy depending the case [:

Cheers!

I'll edit out the 'Worst' part in the tier title. It's a bit misleading.

The NH-DL9 is an impressive cooler for it's size at a height of 110mm. It's the smallest on the list.

Besides ID-Cooling, Inno3D, Aigo, Xigmatek and more Deepcool stuffs. FYI, you can find some of their products here through links of online stores like this, just type the brand and you'll be able to find them. These China branded coolers are so affordable compared to other countries, that's why they are popular in SEA.

Also, I would like to see a liquid cooler (AIO) tier list and a tier list for low profile air coolers.

Can I ask why the D15S is T2 but the non S is T1? I've put a second fan on my D15S and it made literally zero difference, as was found here

I've never seen my 1.36V 3.9GHz OC on my 1700X go over 60C....

Also, as an owner of both the H7 and M9, I think the M9i that I used on my 4770S was pretty damn good. It cooled that thing amazingly, never hitting 60C even under sustained stress with SpeedStep off, cooling BETTER, I might add, than my previous Hyper T4.

There's a consistent 1c or larger difference between the NH-D15 and NH-D15S at load.

http://www.relaxedtech.com/reviews/noctua/nh-d15s/4

https://www.modders-inc.com/noctua-nh-d15s-cpu-cooler-review-how-the-best-got-better/4/

It's a small difference but it's consistent and not literally zero. That's how close each tier is in performance.

The M9i is good and performs similarly to any of the coolers listed in the same tier. The T4 has just been added to the tier below it.

Well maybe the Fortis 3 HE1425 is a different model than what you have there.
