US Government will be intermittently jamming GPS near New Mexico until Feburary 24

If you live in the above circle and have been experiencing intermittent GPS issues, you have the US Government to thank. From Jan 26 to Feb 24 (FAA ADVISORY HERE) the US Military is running exercises to practice against scenarios in which the GPS network is destroyed or crippled. Instead of just disabling their GPS receivers a large amount of GPS interference will be broadcast during these exercises. The expected range will be about 232 miles in radius and increasing in distance based on height.

Honestly, I think this is crazy as more localized interference can be done and the US government is affecting thousands of people (even though it's New Mexico).

I don't doubt that they said it, I doubt that's the actual reason.

Here's an article reporting on it

"...the USAF is going to blackout GPS over the sprawling Nevada Test and Training Range to challenge aircrews and their weaponry under realistic fighting conditions."

And here's a bunch of Google News results

I guarantee this is result in a death. GPS is heavily relied on for emergency services and shutting it down for 2 days is total bullshit.

I can see the drug cartels taking advantage of this situation. If the border patrol cannot pin point the location of a border crossing because of no GPS, then the cartels can easily go through.

They probably have increase security during this time. More choppers and infrared are def going to be needed though.

Mexicans: What about the gringos? It seems like a clear invitation to Narcos for the US to say 'hey guys we won't have any GPS at all throughout this 200+ mile radius right near the border' as a PSA.

Actually considering how many dumb drivers are out there that only listen to the GPS lady and end up in rivers and lakes, this might actually save their lives. :)
