TN vs IPS? Is it really worth $300?

ryanmassey1337

Ok, so my friend recently built a PC but hasn't yet selected a monitor. He wants gsync but he doesn't want to spend over $500. I told him to get either 1080p 180Hz TN or 1440p 144Hz TN. He said that TN panels weren't very good and he would rather get FREESYNC ips (Even though he doesn't have an AMD card). Personally, I think that TN panels have changed a lot over the years and have many benefits such as lower costs, no light bleeding, no ghosting, higher response time, etc. and the fact he would also be able to take advantage of gsync. Is getting an IPS panel worth it? Let me know!

If he’s only gaming, then TN is fine, they have come a long way in recent years and there are some very decent TNs. But anything like video editing or photo editing you are going to want IPS.

I wouldn't do it unless you are doing colour-accuracy required work that need specific colour ranges.

He should just get one of the free-sync 1440p 144hz IPS displays that are $399

Or one of the free-sync 1080p 144hz TN $200 displays

Would never say that G-sync is worth the extra price vs a better panel free-sync display

The Nixeus display has the same panel as the pixio one I believe, IPS is fine on light bleed and ghosting

TN is always going to be trash you don't want if you can help it for daily use.

Yeah I wouldn’t say G-Sync is worth it either. It’s nice for sure, I’d use it if I had it, but I can only think of maybe a dozen times where I’ve even noticed tearing and maybe 3 times where it was actually bad enough to bother me.

He doesn't have a AMD card and I have found multiple nice looking TN panels with gsync under $500... And like the people above said, unless you are doing color accurate work, it isn't worth it.

That not a thing, TN is always bad, especially when you can get IPS at the same price

You can use the displays on an Nvidia GPU no problem and screen tearing is going to be less noticeable at 144hz regardless

It's certainly not worth giving up an IPS display for adaptive sync

Personally, I'm going with TN and i'll get a 2nd monitor later on for video editing and watching videos but what's the point in getting an IPS monitor and giving up gsync, and if you don't get a good model, say hello to light bleeding and shadowing.

Question what card did your friend buy? NVidia uses Gsync which doesn't work with Freesync monitors.

If I were to get an IPS panel, it would have to be 4k and nothing less.

I prefer better looking colors along with great gaming experience. If he can buy an IPS panel, go for it.

I do too but if your sole purpose is gaming, there isn't too much of a difference. The difference lies in Video Editing and other color accurate work.

IMO IPS is definitely worth the extra cost.  It's the #1 thing I look at when buying monitors (not that I buy them that often, just replaced mine after 5 years).

G-sync is nice too, but not at the expense of running a TN panel.  Go for IPS first, G-sync second;

If you're spending several hours per day looking at the screen, I really don't see a reason to make compromises.  Get the best you can, even if it means saving up a little longer.

No, there's a pretty noticeable difference from TN to IPS even for gaming, and when the IPS display is 144hz there's no contest, TN needs to die as it's just really bad for daily use.

But if he only has a 1060 then go for a solid 1080p 144hz TN $200 free-sync display as linked earlier

G-sync is not going to be worth the extra $100-150 in any event.

or 100 GBP in his case, too bad there's no IPS/VA 1080p 144hz displays as far as I can tell

There IS a difference for gaming. The IPS panels for content creation are calibrated for such and offer a much wider gamut than you would get with TN. To separate IPS and TN into "gaming" or "content creation" reeks of idiocy since most quality IPS panels are similarly priced to TN panels.

IPS offers better viewing angles making it more forgiving if you shift just a few inches and better color reproduction which helps with games like R6S where camouflage patterns may not be immediately visible.

Wtf? Hell if that's the case I'll get an IPS display myself, even without gsync. If I were to play games like pubg, cs:go, bf1, gta, etc, will the tearing be noticeable?

Do you notice screen tearing in games currently? If not then you certainly won't notice anything at 144hz.

But really there's only the $399 korean monitors for 144hz and IPS

there were a few VA 1080p 144hz they were like $250 from Pixio, but they're all sold out

Well I mean I'm playing on Console right now waiting to build a PC when prices become better and I would like to see what AMD and VOLTA have to bring to the table before I pull the trigger on a 1080 or 1080 ti.

So my answer is no, I don't notice tearing.
