Is NVIDIA G-Sync worth the money?

Hello everyone! I am planning to build a 1080p/1440p build with a GTX 1070 and an i5 8600k over clocked to 5GHz. I have made all the difficult storage and ram decisions but now I'm stuck with choosing a monitor. My current monitor is 900p 60Hz and frankly, I need a new one... but G-Sync is WAY too much... I'd spend $550+ on a monitor but it better be damn good and... Nvidia doesn'the have to much to offer. So I have 2 choices. Get a Free Sync display and toggle free sync and vsync off, OR I can take advantage of the technology with Vega 56... What's the better choice? Does G-Sync have an impact? Let me know!

Gsync monitor? Not really imo. There are good monitors with little screen tearing even without adaptive refresh rate.

Honestly I have a 240hz monitor with gsync and I can't tell at all the difference with it on vs off. The only times where the gsync are useful is at lower frame rates but I never touch them so idk.

freesync is superior!!!

back to topic not really, i mean it isn't different in performance from Freesync

I was going to go with 144Hz IPS but considering that price, I can't complain. Thank you so much. I guess I could always get a secondary monitor for movies and videos. You just made my decision.

That's what I found out when I bought my monitor. I had used a BenQ screen at first, also 1080p 60Hz, that thing shows significant screen tearing even if my frame rates just go slightly below, like 50-55, the refresh rate. With my current LG monitor, screen tearing only gets noticeable when frame rates dip to the low 40s. It in theory shouldnt be possible, but in practice it is.

Seems a bit of tuning makes the dell pretty good for the color accuracy

You should upgrade that CPU sometime, it says you have an i7 2600k. Still a nice CPU bUT you'll get more performance with an 8700k or Canon Lake.

I actually just picked up the Acer Predator XB241YU today and wow it really feels like there's a difference as I was using a 60hz regular LCD display.

Ya, I was using TN Panel prior with the Asus Monitor and honestly unless you're a photographer, video editor, or an overall visual creator you don't really need an IPS. I don't see any issues regarding the colours and the brightness since I use it as my primary monitor but it is angled off to the side. Large viewing angels so there are 0 issues at all. 

 

Honestly, I was in the same boat was as you since I was thinking of getting the Asus rog Pg279q as there were a few refurb models but unsure if they were any good as apparently ordering one and getting a quality one was like the lottery.

 

I settled on this as it was a decent price, works on my budget. The weirdest thing is that the XB241YU in the pictures on the store shows a large thick bezel but when I opened it up, it was actually the "zero" bezel unit so that was a great touch and a surprise. 

 

The big thing is to just remember to turn on the high refresh rate regardless of what brand you use when you get it, I was a dummy and thought G-Sync would take care of that as I wasn't impressed with the first hour until I realized that it defaults to 60 hz with Windows settings. 

 

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask as I did a ton of research as well. 

 

Edit: Forgot to mention that IPS is great for visual creators and TN is perfectly fine for gaming.

Honestly the PG279Q is too overpriced

 

I don't have too many issues with my TN panel on my 900p HP monitor.... besides resolution and the glossy thick bezels... And no sync... Would you recommend your monitor over the Dell S2716DG?

is it worth it ? not really, does it makes a difference ? yes g-sysnc does, comes down to if your willing to part with the extra money to get the g-sync.

I had the x34a and the g-sysnc made a difference running it with a 1070.

But now i would go 24 inch 1080p 144hz+ with g-sync..

yeah no, not really possible, all non adaptive sync monitors tear in the exact same way because they refresh at  the exact same rate, a 60 hz monitor will refresh 60 times per second at the exact same interval, thats what adaptive sync changes, it slows the monitor refresh rate to match the gpu fps, without adaptive sync this does not happen and is impossible regardless of whether its a $1000 or a $50 monitor

I suspect it relates to how the monitor handles the input. I havent measured the input lag of the two monitors at all.
