Now even YouTube isn't safe from cryptocurrency miners

I've removed a bunch of posts debating whether cryptocurrency is a good thing or not. This topic should be used to discuss how it relates to YouTube specifically, for example by discussing the measures that they take to prevent things like this from happening.

Posts discussing cryptocurrencies' perceived merits, or lack thereof, will be removed, and warnings may be given if appropriate.

there should be limits to what js ads can execute, nothing more displaying images or animations should be aloud, and it should auto limit the cpu usage of the JS as a failsafe

I agree. Ads should just be videos or images converted and published by google and redirected only when click on. Should be no scripting allowed. I would remove ublock in a heartbeat.

I use openwrt on my router,  and i have blocked the shit out of MS, Apple and google LOL. I can't even google anything, i have blocked as much google as i could. I use startpage for search engine. Android phones can't operate normally when on my wifi.

The only thing i have from google is youtube. LOL even youtubes completion does not work And also i can't enter google captcha because i can't see it, it's blocked I hate sites that use recaptcha so i do not use them. I use also adblocker on my router and vpn service and dnscrypt. In my linux laptop i use disconnect, noscript, ublock, privacy budger and decentraleyes extensions on firefox browser.

by blocking google, you basically break 50% of the internet. Why would you do this?

With the exception of already watching video content (Youtube), I don't even think video or audiable ads should be allowed. I seriously do not appreciate going to a website, and suddenly have some video or audio from an ad start playing out of the blue, not to mention usage of resources, and (for capped users) additional completely unnecessary data usage.

No not as in actual videos, like if the ad is animated, its converted to a video (no sound), gif or whatever. Just something that doesnt use scripts

Why? I do not see anything broken. I use Sailfish OS on my phone so no google at all there. Startpage is a search engine located in europe (netherlands if i am not mistaken) and pulls searchs from google so that google can't track you. So i still get nice searches. What else is broken? 1 or 2 sites which has recaptcha and i can't access, so i stopped using those sites. That's it.

It's rather frustrating that this is becoming a thing.  Early on (and sometimes even to a degree still) I was in favor of ads and not a fan of adblock.   All websites cost money to maintain, some might just be hosting and a domain name cost,  while others require a webmaster and content creators. If you do not want to pay for that site to stay active, then you should allow a certain degree of ads to pay for it for you.    Yes you become a product, but only in so far as you become a captive audience for ads, not as a commodity of information to sell.  However with ads becoming more insidious and dangerous, we are now moving from a place of adblock being unethical to being another defense against malware and unethical practices.    

 

I tend to white list sites that do not abuse their website with insidious ads, however I more often simply stop using sites.  It is not fair on the good sites that don't abuse their viewers, however as is always the case, it only takes one bad apple, and I can't afford for my system or kids computers to become infected with malware or be abused for CPU cycles.

Is it time for a UAC style "This page wants to execute a script on your computer. Allow it?" pop up in browsers?

 

Ok so that's not an entirely serious suggestion as that would be horrible but I do think the browser developers need to give us something built into browsers to view and control what scripts sites are running on our machines because this is getting a little silly now.

Maybe companies could run two websites, one that did nothing but server up HTML and the other for logging into accounts and the like.  That way we could use a browser incapable of doing anything other than reading basic HTML and video stream for general browsing (reading news,videos and music, looking up timetables and shares etc) and another that we only used for banking and gaming.  It would be a lot easier to maintain a secure PC if you only used your full browser for a handful of known sites.

Honestly in reality ads these days are becoming more pointless as people only see them as annoying and something to ignore rather than get sucked in like most companies are fooled into thinking that will happen like some blockbuster movie cliche. As ads are getting more and more blocked, this is what people are now resorting to. Quite sad. I can understand being able to cover costs of running a service but I can't really sympathize with anyone resorting to that.

I have been running adblocker since 2008 with exception of very few websites where I don't mind seeing one ad or wish to "support" the people behind it.

A lot of websites need ad revenue to work.    It may seem like no one clicks them, but the reality is they do and they do watch them.  There are a lot of local companies advertising through the google network, companies that I know would not keep advertising without proof they were working.

Multiple ad-blockers is actually pretty bad for performance all around. They'll try to compete with each other. Best to get 1 blocker with a ton of filter lists (still slows it down a bit, but not nearly as much)
