Public Service Announcement: MSI will not update on Z97 and older chipset for Spectre flaw

This was the email extract from a support ticket which i sent few days ago to see if there is any BIOS update for my Z97 board.

This sucks (I have an MSI Z97 board too), but as I understand it, Spectre is very unlikely to affect either of us.

I've been very happy with MSI.  I know that my experience isn't universal, but my Z97 motherboard gets regular updates, and when it broke because I forgot to use an ESD strap (it was staticy as hell) they sent me a replacement as soon as they received my broken one.

It was kind of expected that older platforms will not getting the fix. Or at least some won't bother with them.

As far as I'm aware, no manufacturers will be making a BIOS update for chips before Skylake.

No real surprise, they want to sell their newest products and force users to upgrade. Same as Gigabyte, Asus and every others.

Honestly, I'm not even worried for Specter or Meltdown, this whole thing is blown out of proportion. The chances of us "little guys" being hit by this, is so infinitely small, it ain't even worth discussing. There's no money to be made targeting regular users after all, the ones most at risk, are banks, government, hospitals and other entities like them.

Still not going to a new platform, swiss cheese or not. Kind of difficult to remotely hack something that isn't even on the internet much anyway, but that's beside the point.

What i'm most frustrated about in this whole debacle is that no manufacturer is really giving any information for users of older platforms on what's the best course of action they should take outside of chucking their machines in the bin. While average joe end users won't be targeted at a mass scale, it's still worrying to know you literally have a back door open all the time. I would've even been somewhat happier if they at least told me to keep track with Windows updates. But a simple "no" response, they are literally leaving me out to dry with a target on my back.
