Well, too bad.  HBM can't get its act together.  It's not iterating in worthwhile manner fast enough, and it's not doing a good enough job at bringing down its cost to manufacture.  So, buh-bye I guess.

Manufacturing limitations and Supply & Demand are bitches. But the world spins regardless.

From GPU history, yes, higher then 384-bit is possible with GDDRx memory.

 

AMD (ATi at the time) was only one willing to try 512-bit memory bus...that was back on the Radeon HD 2900XT -- did not go well.

512-bit was not used again until the the R9-290(X) and R9-390(X).

 

Just a interesting side:

ATi / AMD are the ballsy ones back in the day willing to try new stuff on their GPUs first.

- 512-bit memory bus

- GDDR4 memory

- GDDR5

 

NVidia has yet to use anything beyond 384-bit on their GPUs.

Of course, this does not include the Titan V and Titan V100, which uses HBM2, and 3072-bit and 4096-bit bus respectively.

 

I'm just saying, as this point, we don't know what is the (effective) maximum speed GDDR6 will be capable of.

Looking through GDDRx history, in theory, it should increase...but then again, it's hard to say if density goes up dramatically.

Theoretical is 18 Gbps; we don't know the ACTUAL numbers are until we have them in hand.

Even 512-bit GDDR6 is fairly unlikely on consumer cards, beyond 512-bit is not happening.

 

The Titan Xp and 1080 Ti are both 384-bit, and GDDR6 doesn't change the cost/complexity of a wide interface. If anything, the faster transfer rate means they'll be less likely to need/want a wide interface.

Very nice bump for GDDR indeed. Prices for memory in general need to go down. Also who knows when GPUs will go down in price too. It's such a mess. But new cards with it will be awesome. 

I take it new HBM will be used for flagship GPUs only.

gamers, miners, folders, small companies that need them for cad/gaming/etc are all customers

they all have the opportunity to buy

 

if you really wanted the card when released you would have purchased  along with supply and demand

plain and simple

 

thats like my kid bitching about all the zelda botw master edition being sold out and none left for him at regular price after he saved up of it knowing the price

shit happens, I can give you more examples but I dont want to shit on your entitlement thinking  of a product is for one class of people even though it serves many when they are priced as so too

 

not to mention these miners are prolly the ones that are paying for next couple gens of R and D
