I don't know.... depends on the kids, and parents knows their kids.

If you kid is 10 or 12 years, and isn't Demolition Man, than it is most likely a fine toy.

You really get a game (or set of mini games for non-robot kit), and the cardborad.

 

I think the 3D printer community will even more fun doing actual plastic parts, and open doors for creative designs for other cardboard designs or 3D printed ones, especially if it works pretty well.

 

One thing that is shitty, is that Nintendo will NOT sale "just the cardboard", so that means that if you damage the cardboard., you have to buy a whole cardboard kit with the game at 70-80$. I mean I understand why, because they don't want parents to buy just the cardboard and missing the instructions (as this is with the game cartridge), and not the game to play with. But it would be nice if you can call Nintendo and order replacement cardboard directly from them. But I guess they don't want to deal with the logistics of that.

Who knows for all we know if it gains traction they will literally sell their cardboard pieces in the toy section of retail stores.

Pretty sure they will be selling cardboard replacements

I don't have any inherent problem with the idea of a cheap cardboard craft set for kids, but I feel like there were two ways to go about it. Either you package the individual sets for $15-20 each with software included and market it as a cheap afternoon of disposable entertainment, or you release the software for $30-40 with instructions and BYO cardboard/strings/whatever. 

 

At $70-80 they are effectively marketing this on par with medium/large sized Lego sets that will survive longer than the kids you buy them for. It makes them look out of touch and kills an otherwise interesting idea.

 

If the software somehow winds up being in depth and fun then maybe they'd have an argument, but I will be shocked if the "games" are anything more interesting than your average $5-10 downloadable minigame shovelware that's been going around since WiiWare launched.

I bet people will just upload templates and you can just trace on some cardboard you found in a dumpster for free

Nintendo has previously given qr codes with links to pdfs before. I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same here with these. Though the cardboard will be utterly useless without the software which, in the end, is what you're actually paying for

I have to say, as silly as it may seem for Nintendo to charge $70 for software and some cardboard, I can't help but like this.  It's creative, eccentric and clearly a way to get kids engaged and active.  Also: it's the most Nintendo thing ever.  I can't imagine Microsoft or Sony thinking of doing something like this even if they had modern handheld consoles.
