PCI-E x8 Splitter

Grimm Spector

Hey everyone, I have an application where I need to split out a PCI-E x8 slot into two PCI-E x4 slots, ideally to two x8 slots with only x4 bandwidth on each, but I'll take what I can get. I've looked around a fair bit with no success. Hoping someone here might have some helpful suggestions. Thanks!

What your asking for is a complicated solution, there are PCI-E splitters but anything passive will not work on regular motherboard it must use a PLX chip to communicate between the board and the splitter to basically direct traffic. The problem though lies in the PLX option and motherboard compatibility, unless your board is a server board or has a list of dedicated splitters that can be used it's all trial and error.

Depending on what OP is trying to do, buying a new motherboard might be a better choice.

That is true but its what he asked for!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this only work with particular Supermicro boards?

Af far as I know nothing like that exists that is cheaper than just buying the correct motherboard.

I know they exist because this has been mentioned before on an older topic:

But it's usually more practical to buy a new motherboard with the required PCIe slots.

I'd love to, but this is for an in place system where that option has been decided to be not an option. I'm not looking for some way to run GPUs off a server or anything.

It is a server board, though I know of no dedicated splitter options for it. It's a Tyan S7067 I think, I am not with the system currently. There's a need to run 2 (or three is even better, but not pushing it), expansion cards for RAID and networking applications.

Then your best bet is to contact the manufacture for details if they have any on compatible PCI-E splitter. If there isn’t any your somewhat in the dark and will have to rely on trial and error to see what works.

Here is a good discussion on splitting PCIE slots.
