Basic PC for Parents under £400

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Hi, I'm aiming to build my parents a new PC because their old one is unbearably slow.

They won't need dedicated graphics or anything intense - it will be used for video, word processing, excel etc.

It will definitely need an SSD for Windows and at least 1TB HDD, and to be upgradable in the future.

As I'm a novice to all this, could people please help me with what the build should be? I already have peripherals, monitor, and Windows 10.

Thanks!

Wow that was fast, thanks so much! Would it be worth upgrading to an i3 7100 or not?

Also, is there much difference between H110 and B250 motherboards?

H110 boards might not support the Kaby Lake chips from the get go, so be warned. Ask the seller to flash the latest BIOS for you or grab the B250. B250 is mostly newer and supports faster memory and some other kaby lake specific features.

It's not worth going to the 7100.

I've used the 7100, and the G4560 is a significantly better value (only reason I did it was to minimize a potential bottleneck of a gaming GPU being just slightly too fast for the G4560 to keep up with.) For your purposes, the G4560 is fantastic.

The G4600 is the exact same price, though, so I'd get the 4600. More speed for free.
